Niche tanks do have their problems, but they can be fun to play too.

ffxi had multiples of each type. so whats the problem? we had like 4 healers, 3 tanks, several dd. and a few of those are hybrids of healer/ dd.
WoW does the same each class has several different roles to fill based on what tree you used.
classes will always have multiple roles. like dcuo each class as a dd style and either tank, healer or controler style. (based on what power you picked.)
Personally i wouls much rather look for other players then certain classes. This will make forming parties easyer and less likely hood of "job of the week". I don't wanna sit and wait fir hours like in ffxi because there was no pld around our whm. playing rdm got hard as I liked to melee and i just happen to be the only rdm around. PPl wasn't pleased with me.
An solid RDM and PLD have tank side by side, I know, I had no problems. RDM will get hate often, of course I let him, it's pretty decent.
We already have "magical" tanks in the game thanks to the armory system. I, for one, use a lot of magic to increase my aggro generation and resistance (heals, absorbs, bio and such).
With how the class system is implemented, you can easily decide to be a more physically oriented or magically oriented tank at leisure.
In any MMORPG the number of tanks needed for each group is much more limited than that of DD/Healers. Increasing the number of tank classes risks to overpopulate the tanking role, like it actually happened in FFXI.
Considering the fact that a LOT of people play Gladiator (and many end up having to double up as gimped damagers) I would say adding more tanks is unwarranted. Especially considering that variation already exists.
This, of course, not even counting the fact that we already have multiple jobs with tanking potential in the game. On top of gladiator both Marauder and Pugilist have tanking abilities, and can tank very well with the right ability setup.

I'm sorry but you are wrong. there are plenty of mobs that only use magical attacks. Maybe because the battle animations suck you don't realize this but one for example are the Imps. alot of the mobs have elemental attacks as well as melee. I for one would rather be able to take less damage from impish incantations and take more from a dodos stock attack.
I rip the axe from the head Covered in blood and brains Leave the body lying dead Ready to strike again
My sword cuts through clothes and skin Like a hot knife cuts through snow I smile as the bastard screams When I twist my sword
Sword in my hand Axe on my side Valhalla awaits me Soon I will die Bear skin on my back Wolf jaw on my head Valhalla awaits me When I'm dead
Viking Job Please!
I can tank as an archer. We should have Long-range Tanks too.
Pretty much any job in this game can tank just fine.

Just lol Imps ! The basic attack of Imps is physical. So ok sure, a magical tank can handle a super mega magical spell from an Imp: 10 damages. But he will be dominated by a simple physical attack: 300 damages. WTF ? This class will be a massive FAIL.I'm sorry but you are wrong. there are plenty of mobs that only use magical attacks.
