IMO they just didn't have the time/will to completely revamp fishing so they've turned it into something mind-numbingly simple with the excuse that you can use it to "relax and chat".

Seeing as nobody has yet experienced the 'New fishing' we can't yet discern if it is mind bogglingly simple.

Why do people adopt this "It will be the worst possible outcome, and the <insert feature> will be broken!"

They haven't said "It will be autofishing" they said, "Best to experience it yourself" until then, all this conjecture about how 'broken' fishing has become, is pretty useless.

They said "Best to experience it yourself" because they don't want to say it's auto-fishing. If the best of variety they can offer in their description is "there will be different types of fish" then you know it's not going to be a very complex system.

I'm no fanatic of fishing but I can definitely see why people like my love Llen are disappointed. Of course we might all be wrong but all signs are not looking very positive.

Exactly! This is exactly how it feels.

And regarding the 'wait and see' tactic, it helps nothing. The little signs they've already have given us points to not boding well for fishing. And I've learned from the Tanaka days not to assume anything is being done unless otherwise stated. They need to realize our concern and show us in detail what they have planned so that we can give the appropriate feedback or else I'm pretty sure were going to be stuck with a lame fishing system. I'm starting to really hate the simplifications this games starting to go through with gathering and battling in general seen so far through the videos. I understand the need for easy of use but there has to be some sort of challenge too.

In ARR, you will first need to walk near a water spot, select a fishing pole that matches the type of water, and then select the bait. There will be no actions during the fishing process. I believe that sentence sums it up.

I hope that it is amazing and wonderful and everything else I can think of while wearing rose tinted glasses, but from that translation it certainly doesn't sound like it and the fact that they're leaving it til phase 3 is kinda scary like there's not really 'that much' to test :/

Point and click doesn't = autofishing, it's a mindnumbing process lol, kinda like the really old FFXI days before you had to fight your fish.

So, since we have an explanation of it from the live letter, our conjecture is not entirely useless . I do appreciate your input though, but please understand also that we do have a valid reason to be worried. Trying to make a system that caters to people that abhor gathering won't magically make them enjoy it now, all it will do is hurt those that genuinely did enjoy gathering to begin with.

I think you are being too hasty to assume bad things, and seem to be basing worries on top of your previous worries.

Please look at the new updated Q&A posted March 6, which states (emphasis mine):

Although there will be a few skills you can use when fishing, it's been designed so they're not absolutely necessary, allowing players to relax and enjoy the experience if they choose to do so. Also, we plan on having different types and sizes of fish depending on the area and water temperature.

Also, the fact that they're implementing it in Phase 3 doesn't mean they're waiting. It (probably) means it won't be ready for user testing until Phase 3, or some other logical reason due to how SE is running their beta testing to get the most success from it.

Remember also that if SE wants to change how fishing works, such as add more complexity or more anti-RMT, they can do so any time after launch, just like they did with both 11 and 14.

I think, at least for me, at this point we're all somewhat, sorta appeased with the fact that there may be at least a little complexity to the system. If I have to worry about water temperatures, that could be fun, especially if the temperatures are dynamic.

The biggest concern seems to be, at least to me, that they're building the system with the misguided perception that fishing should be something you can do in lieu of standing idle in the middle of a city. As Yoshi puts it, fishing is something you do when you don't have time for anything else, and so that you can chat to friends. As Colino put it, we're able to chat just fine while sitting in the middle of a city. I don't fish with the intention of chatting, I fish with the intention of collecting a lot of materials for my crafter friends, and for making money through sales, and for trade-ins for GC seals.

A bit of complexity is a good thing, 'cause when it comes down to it, there wasn't really that much complexity in 1.xx. The fact that we may or may not be removed entirely from the economy is definitely a concern though. There's also the fact that, if this is how Yoshi perceives fishing to be, we can more or less kiss any content expansions for fishers in particular goodbye.

I'm pretty sure at this point we've all accepted the fact that we'll have to wait till phase 3, but we still would have liked at least some dev recognition. We're all worried, and saying, "Just wait, it'll fine" does nothing to abate that fear.

I have 100 Fisher in FFXI. In FFXIV I have FSH 50 - I have paid my dues, i enjoyed the long hard slog to get there.

I know it says "There will be no actions during the fishing" - but there may be more strategy in when/where to cast. Baits/Lures/rods. etc. I get that some people are expressing their concern, no problem. My point is that the majority are going beyond that and assuming the worst before it is even here. Without the chance to at least 'try it out' calling for SE to change it back, just seems like a futile task. Not to mention, they simply won't change it back, regardless of how many people gripe about it in the forum, until we have at least had a chance to test it. This isn't even the beta forum, so sadly nothing can be disclosed or discussed on here properly until the NDA is lifted. All we have is conjecture, on something we can't yet test.

Will everyone like it? I guarantee the answer will be a no.
Will some people like it? I guarantee the answer will be yes.

Will I personally like it/love it/hate it? No idea. I'm willing to wait it out and try it when it gets here.

Do we know the proportions of who will/who won't? Not until we have had a chance to test it.

As for 'Phase 3', this is not a signal of "Not much to test", there will be plenty of time for feedback and change before release. Even in phase 4, when beta becomes open for all to view and discuss, there will be feedback and changes.
