Blatantly ignoring any threads posted before me and after, my take on the idea of having characters talk is thus: It would be neat, but they would need A LOT of choices for anyone to be moderately satisfied if they're a fan of immersion. Square Enix could theoretically do it, given that they would have to pay people to do it at minimal cost, be willing to do that, and have a sample of people in which to easily access, willing to make themselves part of a multi-million dollar/yen game for the sake of immersion and making that game more awesome...and money. Didn't they recently tell us they had somewhere near 600 employees currently working, in some form of manner, for the Final Fantasy XIV Reborn Project? Who lost millions and damaged both their honor and image? Square Enix, who appears to be doing well thus far, and seems to be diligently working to fix the damage done and start healing from the profits(Hopefully). He currently has the fate of a lot of SE's Money, Reputation, and Honor in the palm of his hand, and so long as he delivers on his promise, SE may be willing to shell out a little more. Now on the other hand, I have people I play with, we talk over Mumble, I have people I talk to briefly via in-game chat, so I get plenty of social interaction while my character is simply the Avatar in which I use to fight, and looks both cute and Awesome. Giving my character a voice and dialog may even conflict with my views or personality, killing my immersion, so having a cute fuzzy mute that nods and is passive unless I say otherwise is a great way to maintain that level of immersion. As a realist, I'd say it's unlikely they'll ever consider it.

    In short, 42.

I see. Nice argument. And we actually all do have a voice although its only a battle voice that we rarely hear. Second... what did you mean by "42"? Did you mean shini (shi is japanese for 4 and ni is for 2)? Which means "In short, die"?

42 is the answer to the ultimate question, which gives an answer to the meaning of life, the universe, and everything.

42 as a western idea is the meaning of life, in a book (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) a computer was asked for the meaning of life and it responded many years later with 42.

Has nothing to do with the pronunciations of 4 and 2 in Japanese and how its like go die, shi ne.

I see... Although that seems very context specific... And you're right it is shine for go die and shini is just the first half of shinimasu, which means am dying. 42 makes little sense without knowing the context and sounded close enough to shine, so I thought that is what she meant at first.
