Q20: Will we ever be able to send tells from within an instanced area?
A20: While the feature can be implemented, it’s currently masked. It’s currently masked because we would like to prevent players from harassing each other just because they know they would never party together in the future. We will continue to monitor the situation carefully as we move forward.

I think I should clarify just what I meant by 'spoken dialogue' though - I wasn't actually referring to actual vocal conversations, but basically text based dialogue in the chat log, like a regular NPC.
Considering there was little actual spoken NPC dialogue in 1.0 (only in a few main scenario cutscenes), I don't think 2.0 is going to even give NPCs much spoken lines, if any. Hence spoken dialogue by player characters in cutscenes would just be out of place. Text based player-character dialogue in cutscenes would be a much better fit, even if it is old-school.![]()
That is part of what your companion is for. It's the compromise. It allows you and your companion to respond verbally to a situation without forcing a personality on the player's character. I like it that way.
When all else fails, Heck the Bed.

I am all for the quiet non talking cutscenes from my character. But what happened to the cutscenes with any voices at all?
There was like one near the beginning of the game and then it never happened again. I would love to hear more voices in the game but from my character nah.

Blatantly ignoring any threads posted before me and after, my take on the idea of having characters talk is thus: It would be neat, but they would need A LOT of choices for anyone to be moderately satisfied if they're a fan of immersion. Square Enix could theoretically do it, given that they would have to pay people to do it at minimal cost, be willing to do that, and have a sample of people in which to easily access, willing to make themselves part of a multi-million dollar/yen game for the sake of immersion and making that game more awesome...and money. Didn't they recently tell us they had somewhere near 600 employees currently working, in some form of manner, for the Final Fantasy XIV Reborn Project? Who lost millions and damaged both their honor and image? Square Enix, who appears to be doing well thus far, and seems to be diligently working to fix the damage done and start healing from the profits(Hopefully). He currently has the fate of a lot of SE's Money, Reputation, and Honor in the palm of his hand, and so long as he delivers on his promise, SE may be willing to shell out a little more. Now on the other hand, I have people I play with, we talk over Mumble, I have people I talk to briefly via in-game chat, so I get plenty of social interaction while my character is simply the Avatar in which I use to fight, and looks both cute and Awesome. Giving my character a voice and dialog may even conflict with my views or personality, killing my immersion, so having a cute fuzzy mute that nods and is passive unless I say otherwise is a great way to maintain that level of immersion. As a realist, I'd say it's unlikely they'll ever consider it.
In short, 42.

I see. Nice argument. And we actually all do have a voice although its only a battle voice that we rarely hear. Second... what did you mean by "42"? Did you mean shini (shi is japanese for 4 and ni is for 2)? Which means "In short, die"?Blatantly ignoring any threads posted before me and after, my take on the idea of having characters talk is thus: It would be neat, but they would need A LOT of choices for anyone to be moderately satisfied if they're a fan of immersion. 42 is the answer to the ultimate question, which gives an answer to the meaning of life, the universe, and everything.

Maybe you can select few options in your config and character creator to set on how YOU want you character to talk like by setting in options such as...
Stronger,Full of himself, Shy, scared... its alot of work to add those options into play in dialog. It's much easyer to leave it to the standard MMO style like it alwas has been or just make 2 types of dialog for females/males. Theirs already some stuff for characters to in game to say to you based on sex but would really like to see if it's other way around.

characters in MMOs which don't talk during cutscenes don't talk because the developers don't want the character's personality to clash with the player's idea of what the character's personality should be. so there is interaction and npcs talk *to you* but your responses are only implied as a means to provide a blank slate for you to fill in with your own imagination.
i can almost guarantee your character will never legitimately talk during cutscenes because of this. square doesn't want you to feel like you're playing somebody else's story. it's supposed to feel like your own.
