Oooor, we could do it ffx or ffxiii style where you kinda allocate points to stuff on a grid, eventually reaching up to a new spell. Considering its an mmo we could make the points needed to get certain spells or go on certain skill paths really tough so people dont get everything and "customizing" your skill path becomes a thing. Also considering its an mmo and most pple would eventually end up going the "preferred" skill path, we could make the different ways to go have their own exclusive merits, making it very situational and debatable which to choose.

This idea has been popping up a lot in the forums. I have to say that personally, I support this, or something similar that allows for individual customization.

However, I also have to say that I'm afraid that this kind of system will not be used as it should be. I'm afraid that pressure from end game fanatics/mechanics will cause everyone to 'customize' their character the same way. I just see players not getting party invites unless they have a specific skill set, or specific gear.

Anyway, on to the main topic, I do like the idea of questing for spells. With all the changes they've made to the leveling path, battle system, and pretty much the entire game, I think that we'll have a good mix of different options. Some quested spells/abilities, some that are granted automatically, some given to us in ways we haven't thought of yet

Everyone thought paid retainers and fantasia would be the end of it.
