New Hard Drive Installation and Data Transfer

Hey all, figured since the forum is technically labeled Technical Support, and I noticed common PC troubleshooting issues are sometimes posted here, I thought I could get some feedback on an issue that I have.

I had built a pretty nice rig not long ago, but I had ordered a SSD and had ordered a HDD at a later time, but by the time I got the HDD I was pretty complacent with my current setup. But now that more programs have been installed on my computer that I'd rather not delete off the machine, I've found a need to set up my secondary drive.

So I was wondering how to do so. I know you can copy a lot of files over with no pathing issues, but you can't copy over programs due to the pathing set in the OS. And don't I have to format the thing and set it up somehow?

I basically want to leave Win7, FFXIV and a few other programs and games on my SSD, while I put my documents/pictures and a majority of my other programs on the HDD since there's so much room.

Turn your computer off. Turn the power supply off. Install your HDD in the case. Turn your power supply on and start your computer. Windows should recognize the new HDD. Now you can copy your photos and othe data that you want to copy zo your new HDD.

And I can create a file architecture as I see fit? Also, what about my programs? Just install them onto the new drive? If I have Win7 64, do I have to do anything special for programs that work in 64bit mode, other than create "Program Files" and "Program Files (x86)"?

As far as my knowledge goes all programs which set up a registry entry cannot be moved that easily. It is much easier to reinstall them on the new drive.

I'm don't know how big your SSD is but programs are normaly not big at all. I have 120 GB of SSD space where i have windows, programs and games that i play very often. On my HDD i have all the other stuff like photos, videos, music and games i play only 1 time till i finish them or that i play rarely at all.

If you want to move your programs to the HDD you should most likely reinstall them on the HDD. Just make a folder that is called programs or whatever you want to name it. And don't forget to save and copy important stuff that won't be there anymore after reinstalling a programm, like account information and other things.

Hmm, after plugging in the HDD, nothing but the C:/ shows, along with my dvd drive. Going to Device Manager, see that it's reading somewhat, but the details on it are vague, and there's no option in the BIOS to more or less 'set it up'.

    What gives?

Ah, thank you Reinheart! As it turns out I ended up just having to format it, so the directions definitely helped!

Also, great work on your translations

Now the only thing remains: If I want to instal programs on this new drive, do I have to separate the Program Files into 32 and 64bit?

Not at all. I would reccomened for easier navigation and just also keeping things neat and tidy....Before you actually install any programs onto your new hard drive to create a folder called "program files" or something similar. All programs that you install, if you want to install them to that hard drive, just make sure during the install process that you set it to that folder, and not the default Crogram files folder, and it will work just fine.
