I've seen plenty of Silverlight Security Updates, and IE Security Updates in their Security Updates list. Not the actual program itself. To be fair I had to install Silverlight for a Job I had so I can't say 100% it wasn't there before hand. Sun, oh Sun. I've had Sun JAVA disabled for practically forever due to Sun's antics. And that's the thing, they pushed Safari via a Security Update. It didn't show you a checkbox before it installed it like that Java update does. [EDIT] Ok so they did, but it was fresh software in an Updater, which has no business having an "update" for something you don't even have installed [/EDIT] It just installed it if you had it set to install security updates automatically, when it's not a security update.

Again, these other companies doing similar gives Apple the right to be just as bad? Doesn't give Sun/MS the right either, but it's ok for Apple? Like I said before, I don't pidgeonhole, companies that do this, don't deserve my money. I just see more people saying it's ok for Apple to do it, but not others. No, it's not ok for any of them.

Source of piracy relating to iPhones and their ilk, isn't Jailbreaking. That however is a whole different beast that even less people will listen to so I will leave it at that.

Setting "Windows Auto-Update" does similar wonky stuff. You should turn auto-updates off in both Mac & Windows systems. If what Laraul stated was true - and there was a little checkbox for Safari when doing it manually - then this is perfectly fine. Microsoft is just as guilty of this as Apple.

Ok so you don't give Microsoft your money either? It is extremely unfair to pigeonhole Apple for doing this, when Microsoft are equally guilty of this.

Remember you are using free software designed by Apple on a Windows based OS. They could be really cruel and not provide iTunes support for Windows if they wanted to.

The following is taken off the support section on the Apple website as posted above.
Apple strongly cautions against installing any software that hacks iOS. It is also important to note that unauthorized modification of iOS is a violation of the iOS end-user software license agreement and because of this, Apple may deny service for an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that has installed any unauthorized software.
It is in their every right to do this.

I have the 15.4" RMBP and it handled FFXIV well. But just to be safe, get both.

Correct, the last money I gave MS was for an original MS Mouse who knows how many years ago. And no, I don't pirate Windows either.

I know about the iOS Terms and EULA. They certainly can't throw you in jail for jailbreaking, and I have no issue with them denying to service a jailbroken device. If you choose to Jailbreak, they can warn you however they wish, however if you still do it, they should have no control over disabling your device or whatnot. Because it's just that, your device. You understand the ramifications of doing it. At least I would hope anyone who does it understands them.

Also, Cruel? Depends who you ask, Many years of general tech support would have been far less painful if there was no iTunes for Windows.

That is fair enough. I personally am under the impression that if a product does its job well and doesn't break, then the company that created it is worth investing in. Some people have tighter conditions of course though.

Well when agreeing to a terms of use contract, you are agreeing to all elements in that contract. If they list certain aspects with a software (as an example), followed by the repercussions of breaking those terms of use, then yes they can carry those actions out. How harsh the discipline is, is totally the company's choice, as you as a consumer accept these terms.

For example we pay money to SE every month for a game. The physical game may be on our computer, and our characters may be on an account under our name, however if violating the terms of service, they are within their rights to shut down/restrict access to the service or game.

Every company has terms and conditions in place for good reasons, and it is within their rights to act on those terms and conditions. Since Jailbreaking can lead to illegal activity such as piracy, it is totally up to the company how they would act on that. This is not only to protect the applications from being pirated, but to protect themselves from the developers that produce the applications from taking legal action on Apple.

Well that's the way I see it. Take it how you like. They aren't necessarily the devil that a lot of people seem to make them out to be.

Also, Cruel? Depends who you ask, Many years of general tech support would have been far less painful if there was no iTunes for Windows.
Haha true enough, it has been pretty garbage at the best of times, although not to kiss Apple's butt anymore then I already have, as a DJ I can say that their smart folders / playlists are extremely useful when you have thousands of tracks, and need to enter specific conditions quickly.

I also don't see our little chat as an argument, as both opinions have been pretty valid/solid views, and I have actually enjoyed this discussion - unlike some on these forums :P

    Happy V-day!

Chic and stylish is trumped by function. I wouldn't pay nearly 2x the cost just for a more stylish laptop or PC case.
