Stay away from HP, Dell, and Toshiba laptops... Can't tell your how many of those I've had to repair due to cheap parts. The only time you should use the words Dell & quality in the same sentence is when talking about Dell's UltrapSharp monitors. If I had to pick a company to go with,, would have to be ASUS.

Buy a desktop and save yourself the money you're looking to waste by buying a laptop in the first place.

I agree with this. Save the gaming when you're at home/dormitory. Laptops are just really not well suited for video games without taking alot of compromises. Laptop for work. Desktop for play.

Try going with a AMD FX8350/Radeon7800 build and use the rest for a simple office spec laptop.
Avoid the older bulldozer FX chips, they're not that great.

Tibian and Dhalmel, i've responded to this before but i'll do it in more detail, i have a gaming machine at home which i will be using to play. Its now a few years old so its not the best but still does ok with things like skyrim. The laptop is more for ffxiv while at college and for weekends i'm off visiting in-laws.
I'll reiterate again yes i know desktops are the better for gaming i've built my own and for others many many times over the last 16 years. For those that are doing the maths yes i'm going back to college at the age of 33 and yes i've been building PCs since '97.

Find it hard to believe you're not ever going to play another PC game or do anything not related to college on a $1000 investment (yea i know you said CDN but it's so close to USD these days)

Anyway, I have to concur that if you really want to play the game, $1k will go a LOT further on a desktop. If you need to take it with you for work that may not be an option I realize. You should still be able to find a useable laptop for the game at that price point- just be sure to avoid anything with "Intel Extreme graphics" or "Intel HD graphics". These are not well suited to running newer games at even halfway decent quality levels.

I've been using a Sony VAIO for the past 2 years and never had any problems with it.
Obviously it's fine for work/university/college and also for video editing I do at home.
It was able to run FFXIV 1.0 on highest or close to highest settings without any performance problems and the cost was ~1000€ back then, so probably around $1250, but obviously the price has dropped in the past 2 years since it's relase so $1000 should be enough.

Also, aren't the specs for ARR supposed to be lower than the ones for 1.0? I don't know how fast you need one for college but if you don't need it soon you could wait for those to be released and then base your decision on them.

There are decent laptops that will play 2.0 just fin e but they are not cheap.

Had a asus and returned it for an acer, saved money, and my performace went up (just turn off that extra cloud crap).

The one I just to test with is a I7 with both the HD4000 (for basic use) and Nvidia GT650 (high end) Since most of the V3 series support dual drives, pop in a SSD and have it used for caching in windows 8. the default 8 gig of memory is sufficient, can add 8 gig more.

THe hard drive is the slowest part, but with SSD caching it changes.

V3-771G-9809 or newer 9900 can be gotten at between 899.99-949.99 USD. I was lucky to get one with a modified screen for 849.99 at a tech show.

Now I just need a windows phone for linked control. But have to much music on google

I need to say something. THe V2 771g series is made for gaming, but they are big laptops. It's a 17.3" screen. The only case I found that it fit in was the backpack laptop case at walmart. Love that one, has plenty of pockets ect. It won't fit in standard 17" cases.
