The point of having a helmet, is to protect your head...and ears. not cut extra holes in them, for enemies to pierce stuff into your head, through. It would look really dumb to have your ears sticking out of the helmet anyways...
Race armor is a good idea, also I would like to see some more "cultural armor" like how you'll notice that some NPCs in Limsa are wearing navy like uniforms as an example, we need more of that but on a bigger scale.
I was somewhat disappointed when I saw that the Grand Company uniforms were the same in all 3 nations, even though the 3 leaders had very different looking styles that should have been in my opinion the "leader variety" of what the soldiers wore for each company.
While on the subject of clothes, am I the only one that would like a feature where Free company members get their gear dyed to match the FC's colors, when they wear the pearl for it?
It really depends on how SE decides to treat the different races/clans in ARR. While 1.0, had lore on the site for clans, made no real effort to differentiate between them in-game. FFXI had a lot more in-game lore between the race/clans/countries and even created a sense of culture around the races. fxiv does have culture between the cities, it does not between race, at least not an obvious one.
I Think original dev team stated that they didn't want their to be a big difference between race as far as gameplay/store goes and the new team didnt change that in 1.0 so we will have to wait and see what they do for ARR. If they races had their own unique feature in terms of culture, then u can create cloths around that aspect, right now there is no such difference between the race.
that why i like FFXI storyline more then FFXIV in the sense the each race had it own culture. You knew why this race dislike that race or why this race befriend and live in this city. In FFXIV we all mix together the only thing we know that 4 race came from other island outside of eorzea and elezen are the only one that belong in eorzea. It really depends on how SE decides to treat the different races/clans in ARR. Yoshi-p should really start thinking of adding mix race NPC in the game because in FFXI i understand how it could be rare. Each race that could mix dislike each-other like hume and elvaan and galka could not even mix with other race so that count them out lol.
I really want more culture everytime i play FFXIV i feel like i don't really belong anywhere. Just a person who can sign up to anything and join. I know that the point of us players but i did enjoy the fact that i'm a elvaan and i was born in san d'oria and i do anything for them. I just hope they can bring some of that into FFXIV something to hook me lore wise when it come to my race/clan.

Yes clan specific armour, but not crappy starting gear. Clan specific "lore" quests and lv50 gear sets. Also whilst I am here, get someone different to design each separate set so they don't look as if one person designed every item of clothing in the entire game as it did in 1.0.
