Money plays a very large factor in Aion housing, in addition to the unlocking quests. I suspect that FFXIV:ARR housing would be less gil-intensive and more community-oriented and quest-oriented.
The FATE system is still very hush-hush, but I suspect that Naoki Yoshida would like to use what he's learned from playing Rift, plus combine it with the proven success of "Besieged" and "Campaign" from FFXI.

lol ur pic isn't working its ok I know most people want it. lol
always the same story: "Yoshi you'r doing a great job, bla bla bla," he really enjoy letting us at the edge of our chair pressing refresh on lodestone and blog. Honestly we cant say that yoshi is doing a good job till we really play the game.
I honestly think people are expecting too much, just from a practical perspective. Do we need all of these features for FFXIV: ARR to be successful at launch, honestly? It's possible, even probable. But the fact of the matter is it takes time to develop content. It's already a small miracle that they managed to rebuild an entire game in two years; from the ground up. And not a small game either. Of course a lot of the content is going to be released after launch. It's probably not a good thing, but I dont see it going any other way.
As for information, I think we've gotten quite a bit about what is going to be in the game at launch. It's just we haven't gotten anything new recently. Once beta hits it's stride, perhaps they'll release more info, we'll just have to see. Personally I wouldn't mind if we didn't see any new info before release. More advertising, yes, info no. I would kind of prefer to discover those sorts of things on my own, honestly.

Why do you NEED this information ahead of the game?
Just enjoy it!
