There was talk of retainers being shared between characters.
If that happens we will need to buy more.

I don't know if I will really need extra retainers, but if it will be the case I'll pay for them but not monthly! I don't know, €2,00 per retainer forever.

I was having this idea about SE charging money for extra retainers. What do you guys think about it ? PS I enjoyed crafting a lot more to that I like collecting items and gear

You know, this is a great idea! It's not like SE didn't think of this idea before FFXIV 1.0 came out or anything...

It just never saw the light of day because of FFXIV 1.0's fail launch.

I still believe real life cash shouldn't be used for retainers...but if they were, I agree with the one time charge...monthly is out of the question...even if retainers are account bound...they will fill up CRAZY fast with 8 characters on a server.

Personally I don't think that paying for extra retainers with real money will work very well, considering that you can make up to 8? characters on one account which each character will have its own two retainers, so most people would just created extra characters and just send items to those characters and put it on their retainers at no additional charge.

In ARR retainers could be used as storage but the main purpose of them would be to sell items in wards, I would assume at least. So if you like hording items for crafting and stuff than you should be ok to store them in your housing.

Only Legacy and those who pay for the premium monthly fee get 8 characters. Basic monthly you cannot.

Basic monthly gets you 8 characters, premium 40, and all legacy get 40 with the discounted rate.
