    A toggle to display /shout messages cross-city.

To thin out the classic "central hub" that we see in pretty much every MMO, I think it would be a nice small feature to implement a toggle that displayed /shout messages in all cities or field zones in your chat log.

Could toggle it on/off, so if you were hunting for city specific quests you could simply view the shouts in your city or immediate area only. This would hopefully reduce the "central hub huddle" that we see in pretty much all MMO's.

I also feel that it is sometimes a trade off between doing solo content (such as gathering or farming) or watching for shouts during a quiet time on the server in a specific zone where I can't do anything.

If I remember correctly, we're going to have chat channels which is basically what you're asking for.

You have the ability to toggle shouts on/off with the in game configuration menu in 1.0; so it already exist.

If this is true then my thread is mute point. I have no idea how "chat channels" work as my MMO experience is limited to a very small handful of games. Someone mind explaining the basics to the daft?

    You don't understand my point.

Assume I want to go kill Garuda but there are no shouts.
I want to hang around the guilds in Gridania, or go hit trees with my axe, yet suddenly there is a PUG forming in Ul'dah for Garuda.
In order for me to see this I would have to be in Ul'dah, so I miss the opportunity to do Garuda because I chose to hit logs while I waited.
This happens to a lot of us, very often. You often have to decide whether to leave town and do solo content during a quiet time on the server or stand around in town waiting/forming a shout.
So what do you do? Miss out on a PUG and farm, or stand around and scratch your butt in a central hub.

Coming from someone who plays in low-traffic time zones, or at least non-EN time zones, even shout groups were difficult to form due to the lack of EN speaking players logged on, let alone a recruit function that no EN players used. A global shout filter would allow you to see the rare shouts without spamming through the huge list of JP parties.

    I guess you can't relate.

Depends on the type of channel. "Standard" chat channels are either local (reaches everyone in the entire zone) or global (anyone logged in). Trade, Looking for Group, and channels like that are global. Players are free to enter or leave the channels at any time via a /join [channel name] or /leave [channel name]. Some channels are automatically activated when entering a city (i.e. trade) or putting up your LFG flag (LFG channel), but can still be left manually with a /leave command.

    Basically, imagine public linkshells.

Ah right, well that would solve this issue very nicely. I hope that is the case..

Any rep mind confirming this? I did find it difficult being an EN player in a difficult time zone to find PUGs for content when my main LS members were on.

What you are asking, is what the "search" feature in 1.0 suppose to help you with, but never worked. I believe they are rewriting that portion of the code as well, so we will see how things may change once we get our hands on beta in couple of weeks.
