I also coulda swore you could lose aggro to these mobs by running through water/stream/etc. to I guess like 'erase the scent'. I'm pretty sure I did that alot... or was that all just my imagination?
Poor Fern... he can't say anything without the forums pouncing on it, hungry to debate something... ANYTHING.
"I decided to wear my argyle socks to work today..." = "OMG We're getting a sock slot, hidden bonus for knee highs!! who's with me?!"
I guess I could be wrong and perhaps with the proper cipher the meaning of life is revealed within his sage words... but geez people, calm down. Sometimes a sock is just a sock. XD
Per Fernhawles at this week's blog post:
Reference:
and for sound:
Does this mean there will once again be potions and spells that grant invisibility or anti-sound buffs to evade aggro?
Interested to learn more.
I caught on to it when I first read it as well. Tells me 2.0 mobs will have sight, sound, smell ... agro again. And we will use those items to counter them.
Makes no sense for Fern to make reference to another games' items, if they were in fact not making it over to 2.0 as well. Just more stuff for alchemy to make. And it will be handy for those of us who can't manage to sneak past certain mobs.
Some of you are selfish for what others want to achieve too.
In FFXI, yes you could lose the aggro off a smell, type mob by running over any body of water, no matter how small, from puddles to a streams.

"You cannot simultaneously prevent and prepare for war."
I was SMN/WHM in 11...
What are those?![]()
I'm all for it, I mean I think ARR is probably going to need these items to facilitate exploring.
The mob distribution is probably going to be more crowded in ARR than it was in 1.0 because instead of having these massive zones where there were decent gaps between mobs that were placed on paths or at the mouths of caves we're getting basically 35 or so smaller zones, so the amount of mobs in a single area is probably going to be increased, making it difficult to slip past them without getting detected.
Ferne is just teasing us now isn't he?
I think Ferne was just making a throwback comment to FFXI moreso than alluding to the fact that we'll have stealth items again. Kinda like with the blog post showing night time and making fun of standing in a certain direction during a specific moon phase to craft.
I guess we'll see in beta whether stealth items actually exist or not though.
Using the logic: "Ferne mentioned this so it must be coming in FFXIV:ARR" I think we're going to have a mission where we have to steal music from a mob named Soken.
lol
"Pot of Silent Lube"
Misreading makes me laugh... >.<
I'd be for their return so long as walking and staying out of sight are still also effective.
It would mean going into badass areas compared to yourself you can use the pots, but just a zone your level its pretty safe to go normally.
You relied on hitting x to walk past certain enemies in a lot of zones in XIV. Well damn, there goes that argument. Even though you can get knocked off, you relied on your chocobo and gobbue to get through many tough spots for the simple fact of drawing aggro to force them to tether.
So..the last thing that can be said is it would "suck to be reliant on an item" when you relied heavily on trolling the game mechanics in XIV.
