It's not stupidity. Investigating the latest controversy in "outrage-aholic" societies is a very effective way to get press coverage and gain supporters. And the opposite, saying no and/or presenting data and studies to the contrary, comes across as ignoring the will of your constituents. A lawmaker doesn't even have to effect real change, just hold investigations or maybe draft a bill if the interest lasts that long.

As far as this story: The mob outrage mentality doesn't care which video game it is. It's "close enough", even if the actual game had been a non-SE game. Ever hear of Jim Jones or the expression "drink the Kool-Aid"? It was actually Flavor Aid. "Who cares?" you say? Yeah, same thing here.
