Oh man, another addon thread. Half of it is people who are completely in the dark about WOW addon history, cause, and usage complaining about how they ruined WOW and would ruin FFXIV.

For example the recent raid tiers have been tuned with DBM in mind. It's such a popular addon that is completely uneccessary yet the players still require people to have it or you are not aloud in their raids.
Basically what it does: it adds timers and alerts to your UI so you can see when a boss or special monsters are about to use their abilities. Also lets you know if you we standing in "bad stuff" like fire or something on the ground that is hurting you.
It's a nice add-on, but it takes some of the fun out of the game IMO. You let the addon do all the work so you can stand there and focus on your damage and nothing else. The players don't pay attention to mechanics or don't learn the fights therefore making it harder on everyone.
Some addons are nice though like Healbot. It's creates a small set of unit frames and allows you to bind spells to certain keys or combinations of keys, allowing you to use the spell on whoever you are moused over. Again it's not necessary, but it can be helpful by keeping your teammates health bars condensed in an easy to read frame.
My main addon I used was one that completely recustomized my ui and fonts. The default one was ugly, but it worked, so for me it was mainly for cosmetics and easier to read. (I used healbot myself, and not using DBM makes the boss fights real fun)
