I do have some ideas for smallish boss battles, like a worg chief on the outskirts of the Shroud, a humorous Adamantoise boss in the swamps, a mustached Kobold Chieftain, a few Biggs and Wedge encounters, but I don't know how to fit them in just yet, or even which to pick...

Don't worry too much about how they fit in. Just detail the fight. I am mostly curious to see the kind of expectations people have for complex battles in the game. If you have an idea go for it. I will put anything that I find clever or funny of the front page.

I think i will be doing leviathan next, yes. I had not thought of the ship idea though (its a very good one), so mine might be a bit different. Also call me Sestina. I was a dummy when I made my forum name.

I can't really picture any primal battles right now, and no matter how much I try to picture them normally I can't imagine them as being any less than massive, occurring in what would originally be the open world, likely making use of multiple parties.

For example, in my mind, the quest chain for Leviathan actually starts with sort of a dark memory of a past era, sort of a pursuing Umbral force that was locked away incidentally when we were, awaiting awakening into the Astral age. Its quest-chain contemplates that sleep, umbral forces as a general aspect, and eventually Leviathan as a concept, rather than a primal. From there, it likely goes into the war with the Empire, which then descends further into the idea of the primals as a driving power to Eorzea's magic and life-force, and why the Empire sees/saw this sort of chaotic yet personified heart as despicable. From there you start noticing strange things like prisoners and unaligned pirates alike being shunted into a forced military arm of the Lominsian navy, with Thaumaturges watching over the project, in seemingly simple preparation for an incoming naval battle. In reality it is anything but that. The battle itself is premise, and the new leader of the Archons (Louisoix still leader in name, but this guy, while undemanding and with a quiet sort of charisma, is leading a new agenda -- the usage of the primal's power by defeating and taking control of their physical forms) is preparing for Leviathen's capture. The training leading up to naval battle is grueling, effective, but more than practical knowledge it seeks to instill a mindset that can be used for Leviathan's summoning, with a third of the force just waiting to die, a third complacent veterans, the last third naive, believing they can take on anything -- between them the paradigmatic flow necessary to bring forth the Primal in the midst of bloody combat.

This battle probably won't be possible until having defeated Shiva, the other of the primals having to largely to do with the flow of time. Her quest chain results in the ability to use Echo upon oneself for two reasons: to see into the past, and to see what's happened in the past (effectively the present) while frozen in time, allowing one to be (in mind) in two places at once. That's what's used in this battle. People have to be present for the war in order to first gain access to Leviathan's domain. But the real fight comes with one's own ships, not in the original naval scrimmage, arriving just as Leviathan appears for the actual boss fight. This Archon business plays all sorts of fun on the NPCs you've been training with in the quest-line thus far. Once reached through the quest, Leviathan can be reached through finding the correct rites upon sailing to a correct location (I don't know what properties those follow just yet...). Naturally, no war is required beyond the first quest-chain. The instance will resize itself, and its loot, based on how many players they are, in a common Lominsian pirate-raid setup. It can take 16 or 24 or perhaps even 32 players. Perhaps even any non-rigid number between those (and of course with different breaks depending on the party size ARR uses).

Yet, for all that prelude, I can't really see the fight itself... Bummer.

Edit: I'd like to see some lesser boss battles of the Primals, though they'd likely be entirely separate. For instance, some key sea monster fights, one perhaps in little more than a dingy with a lot of trying to jump onto its shell, get to a fin and dig in or else jump back onto the little dingy when it starts to go underwater. Or perhaps one that involves more of a "fishing" aspect of giant proportions, fought on the beach.

Earlier I was talking about how awesome it would be if they released a rotation fight, say, a Doppelganger, which takes the form of 3 or 4 different bosses, so the fight would play out like this. Fight starts off as one of the Ifrit/Garuda/Darnus phases after their Hellfire/Astral Shriek/Nova. Once it's taken care of, the "true" enemy appears, stunned, and then you do as much DPS as you can, until he jumps away and returns in one of his forms, performing another random primal phase.

I think it would be interesting, although since we basically did all the mentioned fights, it wouldn't be as challenging.

Another idea that I think would be cool were if the party get's split in two, and then have to fight clones of the opposite group.

    I like doppelgangers. Sue me.

    Regardless.

    Phoenix:

    Battle Setup:
    -16-24 man
    -1 hour time limit

    TP Moves:

Final 2hr - Flames of Rebirth (Used only once on final death) - Deals heavy AoE fire damage and can revive fallen party members depending on affinity.

Surtr Inferno - Blankets the lower arena in fire that lasts until Sonic Stream is used or high tier Water magic is used.

Sonic Stream - Phoenix flies outside of the arena and soars across the battlefield in a straight line which if used after Surtr Embrace will cleanse the arena of fire but will auto K.O anyone dumb enough not fortunate enough to move out of her way.

Initial 2hr x2 - Flames of Eternity - Deals massive fire and astral damage (9999) to everyone in range and revives fallen Harpies.
Circumvent: To cut the damage you must defeat Aello, Raidne and Leucosia the first round, second round you must defeat Ocythoe and Ligiea. All 3 (first time 2nd time both at once) must die at the same time or it will only reduce the damage to 3000. Proper death will nullify the damage and raise your affinity by 60%. Defeating Ocythoe and Ligiea properly will nullify damage and raise your affinity by 100%.

    TP Moves while Aerial

Shriek - Deals piercing damage to randomly targeted player. Possible to block with enough elemental resistance or reduction.

    Magic List
    -Fire IV
    -Firaga (Used only after 2hr)
    -Flare (Used only after 2hr)
    -Burn II
    -Banishga
    -Curasa

    Gimmick:

Phoenix can always revive itself in a weaker state each time but with a more powerful '2hr' till the final which varies based on player affinity and quest status.

    Death #1:

    Max HP: 50% cut
    TP Moveset Change:
Surtr Inferno- The flames will "dance" around the arena in a smaller radius but can no longer be extinguished by Water magic or Sonic Stream.
    Firaga- Uses upon revival.

    Death #2:
    Max HP 30% Cut
It will revive and cast Flare (XIV version)

    Death #3 (Final):
Max HP 30% cut still but higher defense

It won't revive after dying in this stage but it will cast Flames of Rebirth as it's dying which will deal heavy fire damage and revive any fallen ally on one condition:

Your affinity toward Phoenix is at 60% or higher.

    Arena Setup

    Something similar to:

    With multiple layers.

    Basic Battle Flow

As stated you'll be fighting Phoenix x1 and 5x Harpies. The harpies have low HP (think Garuda sisters) and aren't too tough but still take some beating. They have their own mini 2hr that deals medium wind damage and during your initial encounter with a Harpy Phoenix will only use Magic. Killing the Harpies apart from each other will cause the remaining two to get buffed up but also throw off your affinity counter, so lowering all 3 HP to the point they can die at the same time or within 5 seconds of each other (account for server lag) the 2hr will be circumvented.

Obviously being an alliance based fight, you'll want a proper tank setup to deal with Phoenix and the Harpies. Every 10% of life from each Harpy they'll fly together in a triangle shape (or across in the case of the last phase) and use Siren's Wail which will AoE stun and silence, so mages would want to be out of range. In the case of Phoenix using Surtr Inferno, you'll have to run to the higher levels to fight the harpies that ascends as phoenix prepares the move, staying on the ground will deal heavy fire damage (1000+) at that point.

Throughout the battle Phoenix will ascend above the arena where only magic and ranged DDs (as well as DRG Jumps) will be able to hit it. While Aerial she won't move but she'll target party members at random to use Shriek.

Really cool ideas everyone this is a super interesting thread. I really like the idea of a chase battle for Leviathan, sounds semi-realistic and a ton of fun.
