Unfortunately, in this game, having both likely won't be a huge detriment. In some games, being able to instantly turn around like that could cause problems.

I did say unfortunately, not unfortunate for everyone. IE I dislike the ability to instantly flip direction without having to "turn" in some fashion, but it physically turning or flipping the camera prior. So it's my opinion. Was one of the things I disliked in 1.0 regardless of what control method I used.
Do explain.
Because from my experiences using your mouse to turn once used to it is just as fast as pressing a single button, allbeit more convoluted than it should be.

For some, yes, it is just as fast, but how many? You still have to do through the motions of turning your camera around, dealing with the scene shifting and such. Not just instantly flip, preventing rear targeting abilities from working.
In the minds of some, it trivializes things. Opposite your view of not having it being convoluted.

I know the common excuse here is that after a short while, people will get used to the new controls and start using them without issue, but the same can be said for the reverse, and people used to other WOW-type controls can pick up on the FFXIV controls in just a few minutes. I think little things like a slightly different camera control and movement help set this game apart from all the others. I was never upset at the XIV controls, and I really didn't think it was a big issue until they changed.
I don't want people to think of XIV as WOW with Final Fantasy themes. I want them to feel it is of a different breed and plays differently, but is just as much enjoyable. Little things like these camera and movement controls are needed to set the game apart, in my opinion.
"There's a time when a man needs to fight, and a time when he needs to accept that his destiny is lost, that the ship has sailed, and that only a fool would continue. The truth is, I've always been a fool."
I did find it a little weird to just " Magically" flip directions though, I mean I got used to it in the end, but at first for like a month I was hard to adjust.
In the end it didn't matter, because what actually mattered was the game itself. Controls are only 10% of the Gameplay Experience. The the rest spread out through Music/Lore/Visuals etc. In the end, those that hate it will adjust ( Most likely) and those that love it won't complain about it.

I adjusted because I like the game overall. However, I didn't like the controls/restrictions in both locked and non locked states. Sure you could backpedal while locked, but you had rather severe movement restrictions. Unlocked you could move freely, but couldn't backpedal properly.
You know even if they weren't going to support both control methods (99% sure they will) it would be fairly easy to just add a extra command for backpedaling, a one button toggle if you will so you could backpedal/strafe even while unlocked.
Hopefully this whole argument is moot when they roll out the new control schemes in Beta and everyone can be happy...well maybe asides PVPers who can't fathom people not needing L337 skillz to turn.

I'm no 1337 PVPer whatsoever. I like it to a degree, but i'm far from being awesome at it. For me it's not about the skill, but about it just not sitting right in my head. You know even if they weren't going to support both control methods (99% sure they will) it would be fairly easy to just add a extra command for backpedaling, a one button toggle if you will so you could backpedal/strafe even while unlocked.

"Wait, how did he just instantly face the other direction without actually turning" I understand the why and how, I just however do not agree in the slightest.
