    I guess it just seems sad that you can not post something you did, then enter it in a fitting contest later.
    I did not enter this contest, but if I did... I would still post my entry up publicly ... in fact I saw many of those entries posted up before hand in public areas (pixiv, DA, livestream, even these forums in signatures etc) so where do they draw the line?
    Theoretically I could make a moogle cake, never post the pictures, then enter it in a moogle themed contest 6 months away. SE can not own the cake... it was devoured long ago, sure they can own rights to the picture, but even in the case of physical winning entries they can all now sell/eat/throw out/post on websites all they want.

    Am I missing something here? ^^;;;
    They have to say it belong to them so that a) You can't profit from it and b) So that SE can use the image as they wish without having to pay you royalties. As long as you're not selling the print on DA and whatnot then don't worry about it. They're really lax like that and understand that friends want to share their art. but if you were to make prints of that image and sell them, then they'd be like "Haaang on a minute..." lol

I mean, one winner posted a picture of their child, SE couldn't claim the rights to someones child now... or could they!? Lol, the piece itself remains the property of the creator. Either way its essentially illegal to make profit on something which has been copied from a copyrighted source. That's what i'm aware of! But people still make things based on CR material and sell it. The companies don't seem too bothered by it. But i do see your point in that creating a work specifically for a contest is strange, but at the same time it forces one to make new things. Also, if a single piece had been used in another way previously. SE would risk getting their heads chopped off say, if a piece was submitted to another contest, which had the same rules.

    As for finding out if it was made for the contest, they could easily do a google photo search. Google would provide sites that host the image prior to the contest start date.
    From the way this is worded:
    All entries and other materials (the "Entry Materials") (including all copyright, trademark, and other proprietary rights associated therewith) submitted by you become the property of Square Enix upon submission,

    They own the piece as well as the rights to it D:. Legal mumbo jumbo pretty much; they're not gonna come to your house and take it, but you can't go ahead and sell it ; ;.
    Se wouldn't own the child, but the costume since that was technically the chocobo themed piece (and human trafficking is illegal! Nomatter how cute the baby is XD)

    Haha yeah, basically they're just trying to cover their own arse; while the item may be in your possession, technically it belongs to them so you can't sell it and make a profit. They're not gonna chase you down in like 10 years time and be like "Oiii that sculpture you have there... I wants it for my mantlepiece!" but it's much easier from a legal standpoint if they have ownership of the item to defend against people trying to profit from it.

    I hope you have a wonderful day!!
