    Path Companion Discussion

    I thought of this about our Path Companions back in 1.0 and how they could be improved on from the last version and from FFXI. I thought that we could have them being more customizable, akin to what we can do with the character creation in ARR. I mean, the way we had the Companions in 1.0 was just a class and character race, and there was very little to do about their appearances. Maybe in ARR us players would have more of an ability to change them up.

    I'd like to make my Companion like a girlfriend to my own character. Hopefully if we can have them out for a longer period of time, it would be different than from FFXI. I remember mine only staying out and fighting with me for 15 minutes. That was such as waste

    I want to lock my path companion in the basement of my hou...

    oh right I was told not to share that stuff... lol

    I want a moogle companion >.>/ - wandering the Thanalan wastelands with my moogle riding my chocobo.. !


    But for the current path guys I'd like to be able to have them try to chat with me through mail, linkshells, and dialog as we do stuff (not count the cutscenes but like actually chatting while doing things like you'd find in mass effect, or one of those bioware games lol - I want to see my chocobo peck my path companion or something).

    Hey, this fun little subject. In general I'd like to see NPCs as something far larger in ARR. It's never been capitalized upon in any MMO, and while I can't say it'd be worth the time costs without an elegantly formed finger of the larger whole pointing at its different possibilities, it does seem lucrative.

    Wouldn't have to stop at path companions either. We've got our fellow guild-members, both AI and PCs. It always suprised me that the quests didn't more often step from those NPCs themselves, and perhaps with their own set of semi-automatically generated missions or quests that might even have an NPC laughing his head off at my utter failure compared to a fellow PC guildmate on my friend's list and still within the same sort of level tier/ladder/rank/period of guild questing.

    "MMOs are so players can interact" doesn't leave you with story situations when your friend has gone missing out there somewhere, unable you to contact you, in danger, and probably with limited time left. These things do not occur to those who simply send you a tell and ask for help gathering from or hunting around a dangerous zone, which is about the only reason a PC would ever get themselves stuck out anywhere. Especially until 'quests' become something more than journals and triggers and xp rewards, something we pursue for ourselves, our own needs in story, NPCs provide an access method into a large part of the FF feel that PCs cannot.

    Yes please XD. I want a moogle buddy >.<

    Plus I think its a good way to make him the Jiminy Cricket (kingdom hearts) of FFXIV. For the tutorials, and when they do that smart phone app they can put him as the little guy talking to you and helping you manage your garden and what have you.

    Hopefully they can time in some fairly deep lore around the same time as they bring them in. Path companions will then go from being the introduction into the complexity of an era too late to save to being the late-comers with understanding. Playing on that difference a bit could be pretty fun too. I just hope the world won't seem basically defeated by level cap. There should definitely be some things out there only a very, very skilled level-capped player can solo, and a lot to make an intense party fight from, and some things with crushingly higher strength. The world still shouldn't give a shit about you the player in that it still has its majesty, bows to none. Not sure if I've explained that very well, but I hope I at least got the gist across...

    I'd prefer a motley crew with some customization controls. Like along your journey you get the chocobo to start. Then maybe at around 25-ish a moogle joins you on your adventures as an available companion. At 35-ish you get your path companion/adventuring fellow (with whom you have a romance option). At 48-ish you can train one of your retainers to fight alongside you.

    * The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.

    Yoshi said he wants to bring back NPC companions later on, in a way that allows you to summon them for help whenever you like, kind of like Chocobos or FFXI's NPC Fellows.

    Ahhh yes... our Path Companions. Mine is likely to give me a long sarcastic speech about abandonment when next we meet.

    I had the witty female Lalafell Shantotto build and it'll be great to eventually get them back so we can upgrade their gear and level them up (hopefully) like we could with our FFXI NPC Fellows.
