I think taking some aspects on mog from vi is a great idea but i would suggest using Geomancer from tactics as the groundwork. It has been a while since I've played it, so maybe my memory is a bit fuzzy, but wouldn't Mog from FF VI be a good basic working model for a Geomancer? I know the description I have in an old instruction manual states "By invoking the name of the terrain dance, Mog will be able to attack using the powers of nature." Granted, his special command was Dance, and not Geomancey, but when he fought on different terrain, didn't he learn different terrain dances that he could use regardless of his current battle location or environment. It is this very last part about using it anywhere that I am not certain about, but I thought he could.
Perhaps if they wanted to do a little acknowledgement of the past connection, perhaps they could use Dancer as a class that can eventually be switched to a Geomancer job.
