    PlayStation 3 version: Why Bother?

Final Fantasy XI was released for the PlayStation 2 first before other platforms, during the height of that console's popularity. The PS2 slim hadn't even been announced yet. And yet today, the PS2 version of Seekers of Adoulin will not be released in North America, and in general it is the PC version that seems to get the most support and attention from Square-Enix.

Now we have ARR on the horizon. 1.0, at least, was written for and graced the PC first. Meanwhile, all indications are the next PlayStation will be announced by the time ARR hits shelves; and there's certainly no guarantee that Sony's next console will play PS3 games.

With the cards already stacked against the PS3 version, and with the history of FFXI showing that support for console versions will get axed well before the PC version, why is Square-Enix bothering with releasing the PS3 version of the game at all at this point? And why should players make the commitment of buying the PS3 version when history shows they'll just have to move to the PC eventually anyway?

These honestly seem about equal if you buy parts on sale... My computer ran 1.0 pretty well at about 75% settings (9 character draw, level 3 shadows, etc) at about $300 value three years ago.

I do hope we aren't limited by the PS3 in ways that would have never been needed for the PS4 though, and that it will be playable on the PS4 when the time comes.

the PS4 is going to use the HD4xxx series Graphics that's already 4 generations old. i often find myself wondering why people are willing to spend 600 bucks on a box of antiquated computer parts, when for 400 dollars one can simply upgrade there graphics card and be set for the next 5-7 years.

consoles used to be about bringing affordable entertainment to ones home, you'd buy a 200 dollar box it came with all the accessories, and games that were appropriately priced @ 20-30 bucks. Those days are long gone and my PC can do whatever the Paystation, Toastbox, & loltendo can do 100x better.

Can it play exclusive Paystation, Toastbox, and/or Loltendo games?

Geee... Forget about exclusives... PC can't even get near to emulate PlayStation 3 and Toastbox...

Not much different in price if you have a computer already that's semi recent and has PCI-E ports. Most of which have them these days, even the cheap ones.

If you don't mind waiting a few days, you can upgrade a pc to play ARR quite cheaply if you use online retailers, and do a bit of shopping around.

Edit: I'm not trying to sway anyone, one way or another. I just think you all should weigh your options, parts vs ps3, then decide. Can't hurt to look around first, especially if you're just sitting around the forums trying to figure out what to do.

I'll gladly help anyone who wants look for parts if they want, that are decent for a decent price. Just an offer. Have at ye'.

A lot of people simply don't want to deal with PC gaming. They like to just put in the disk or install the game and play it, without having to deals with configuration, framerate testing and all that crap.

PC gaming comes with additional work, and while it's great for many like me that love to dabble with it, not everyone does, and it's great for them to have an alternative.

PS: the PSN only handles the login. Until you're logged into the game, like for DUST 514, the PSN doesn't handle any of the data transfered, that goes directly between you and the game's servers.

Yea, I just said that about PSN... Anyways, I don't know why you went into detail about the ease of using a ps3 over a pc. That wasn't the point. Phe said to look at the cost of a ps3 vs pc parts. Truth is, it's not much different if you own a pc already, if at all. No one ever said this that and the other thing about it. Obviously some people are going to want to play on ps3 regardless. That's common sense.

Yea, I use my PC for things besides gaming too. I don't know why you wouldn't want to use a 50" screen for spreadsheets. You can see everything. Each their own though.
