Oh we're doing Chocobo names, too? Mine is Kweth, another nod to Dragonriders of Pern. All dragons have "th" at the end of their name. All I had to do was add "t" to "Kweh" and it was perfect.
Hrmmm, Hidalgo is my chocobo's name, named after the horse in the movie with it's namesake. Hidalgo was a mustang that won an Arabian horse race reserved for only the finest horses. Hidalgo and his owner(partner) were scoffed at as if they were a flee bitten nag ridden by a drunkard gauche American which wasn't far from the truth but what is on the outside doesn't matter nearly as much as what you have inside. The two won my heart in the movie thus my trusty steed "Hidalgo".
Never named the goobue.
My two retainers are named Mahal which means love in Tagalog (I'm Pinay, Filipina for people that don't know what Pinay means) and my other retainer is Pekpek which is vulgar Tagalog and I cannot translate on this forum :P
My Husband actually played Lapulapu when she was first created but he quit so I play her now and for a year now.
Lapulapu is considered to be the first Filipino hero and was a great warrior, tribal leader and was credited with killing Magellan the Spanish explorer. My husband named her and it kind of surprised me that he even knew about Lapulapu. I also think the name in modern context sounds kinda cute and fits the character's personality even though her namesake is a real tuff guy.
So there's the full story behind all my names. Kinda copped out on explanation earlier by linking wiki which only gives the meaning and not the personal story which this makes this thread fun.
I just named my chicken "Toronado" after Zorro's horse.
My chocobo is named Biscuit because Thanksgiving was too long.
Both my retainer's names are twists of my wife's name in real life.
EDIT: I took a class in Filipino Studies and have Filipino family. I figured out your name of Lapulapu awhile ago. I've used the few Tagalog words I know to pick up Filipina for many years. I still love calling Filipina, Bobo as a pet name and their face when they realize I know what it means. Then I generally swap to calling them maganda after that.
I miss my Aunt's pancit and chicken adobo... it was so yummy.

Chocobo name: Badgley - No particular reason other than I like how it sounds when you pronounce it (I wanted it to be Sir Badgley, before we knew whether our Chocobos can have both a first and a last name like our chars).
Gobbue name: Helga - She's big, ugly andproudoblivious, and I luv her.

My chocobo is named Bill. I named him after my grandad's dog who died some years ago. Not much else to really say about that other than it was to carry on his memory in some way. My retainer was named Abigail after our youngest cat. My path NPC was named Tabitha after our cat who passed away a couple years ago.
I just really love putting our pets in game one way or another.
Katti = Finnish for cat (or kitty rather)
Karvatassu = Finnish meaning Furrypaw
My boyfriend has a character called Otso Karvatassu
Otso = From Finnish mythology, a bear - spirit of the forest
So in English we would be (roughly): Kitty and Bear Furrypaw![]()
There is a little Monkey in all of us....
Gennario Veltaine (also called Genn Jenn by many) was pretty much a rabbit from the hat
Gennario was based on a friends name on facebok (Gennaro)
Veltaine, i just flowed out somehow, the two kinda rang, Gennario Veltaine. my previous name was Tolbari Zhei, i felt i needed the change for the new worldand it may change again come 2.0

Gennario Veltaine: Propieter of G&J's Pleather Pleasures
My character's name (Millerna Astor) is from Visions of Escaflowne, which for the longest time was my favorite anime (and still holds the number 2 spot, after Kimi ga Nozomu Eien). I did alter the last name slightly, as I never liked Aston that much. Considering she's from Asturia, I figured Astor sounded better. I used the same name in FFXI, and several other MMOs as well.
My chocobo is usually called something along the lines of Paprika (LadyPaprika in FFXI), because that movie is just excellent![]()
The story of my Character's names was actauly yaken from a book serous my Feonace intrudeced me to. to witch the main chara was named Tarma. Way back in my FFXI days i entered the name as Latarma and the name has been with me ever sence.
