I don't think the general Elder scrolls player is going to be happy with a MMO version of their game. TES was about making the world yours. Kill a NPC they are dead in your world. Drop an item you can come back and pick it up 6 months later. Did you play the villian and murder an entire villiage while they slept? Or did you route the bandits that were ambushing travelers along the road.

How does that translate into an online game? Will your actions effect your world? What about other peoples actions?

This is the soul of The Elder Scrolls series. It's something that doesn't translate to a persistant online muliplayer game very well, if at all.

TES online will be hyped to no end. But I don't think it will be what people ultimately expect from the game.

That and when was the last time bethesda released a game without major bugs? The MMO community is ruthless when it comes to buggy software. the big B will be luck if they can have a stable client and server software ready for launch.

That being said. I don't think there is grounds for a "fight" between these two games. They will both survive even if launched on teh same day. If anything XIV will have a leg up by having a PS3 release, which opens the door to non PC gamers which there are a mega tonne of.

While I, too, am concerned for western attention, I'd like to once more remind everyone that XIV is probably getting much more attention in Japan. It seems almost routine for major Japanese developers to translate games to English and French/German, but not the other way around. On the flip side, most Japanese speak English as a second language. I'm told it's similar to Spanish in the US in terms of common use.

    tl;dr:

Everything is competition to ARR as you have to remember, FFXIV has failed once before and it's still a public image that even SE admits. All MMOs do well their first few months, sometimes first year, however lately pretty much every MMO dies out or has to be heavily reformatted due to "rivals" getting something better and pulling interest. ARR will do fine in Japan and with a niche audience, since in terms of "sub numbers", FFXI held on for almost 11 years being "niche" and it was still the most profitable title for SE. So ARR will fail in the sense people love to bring up (needs millions of sub to be considered successful) while TESO will definitely grab the western audience no problem, as people still herald Skyrim as "the best RPG ever" despite it's buggier than an apt in the ghetto.

Let's face it..they do ok with their games but this is the wisest decision that could have been done. We all know the TES games could be much much better than they were and not needing player modifications to really get the most out of them.

FF is FF. Nothing will ever take that spotlight.

Actually, this is why TESO is being made, because people shown a ton of interest in wanting to play with others in an MMO setting which will allow them to continually expand the world outside of simple DLC which is limited by the initial game design. While it goes against the "open endedness" like that, most people care far more for the fact it's an RPG with tons of story and mythos laid in it. So you can be "good or evil", people mostly liked it for the open route, not so much that specific feature of good or evil.

I heard a lot about TESO.. Most of it was "it's more beta than game and more of an idea, than an actual implementation"
Was just modders who decided to put it online at first. It went official now?
Has potential I suppose but imo skyrim has the same shortcomings as elder scrolls.. Monotony..
Go here talk to this guy, go there "all the way across the map" talk to that guy..
I think i made it half way through elderscrolls and the same for skyrim. Haven't touched them since..
FF has the same shortcomings unfortunatley sometimes..lol..

Yep, despite people (mostly out west) saying FF going online is a bad idea..where would SE be if that game didn't fund pretty much most projects they've done? They have investors but if investors seen unwillingless for SE to follow through, they'd have pull out quite quickly. Even though the typical MMO gamer is jaded as hell, series moving online works as long as the developer follows through.

Same with Warcraft going into WoW, last one was an RTS, not even a real storyline thrown into it, the typical RTS fare.

EU/NA it prolly gonna happen that TESO will perform better then ARR. FFXIV has such a bad image which can't be erased with the release of ARR. It will take time and FF online game was never that popular in NA/EU like others.

It will mostly affect ppl that aren't fans of Final Fantasy or TES, and prolly Elder Scrolls will take more of them. Reason is the bad reputation FFXIV still has.

I seriously doubt that.. FF has the fan base that will hang in there. TESO is just a mod.
It's a mod that is almost certainly going to be buggy as hell.
When it first started it was only that.. modders..
Pretty much everything that modders make, turn out buggy.
I expect TESO to utterly fail.
Not that I want it too. I just expect it too because I knew about it when it was first being made and it was just all kinds of problems..
