I had this issue before I got an SSD. Once I upgraded, load times increased by quite a bit and it was no longer an issue for me.
That's why you never use certain abilities while you are timing his..
You always wait for Ifrit, then you respond, based on the move he makes. Plumes will never get you if you do that.
I just don't want the animations to just stop, because it looks sloppy and hurts immersion.
The animation takes long because it is a particularly powerful ability, so it takes longer to execute.
That is logical to me and should remain as it is..
As long as it remains that you don't end up loosing abilities due to "Excessively" long animations..
I don't want to have to say "Great I can't use this ability the entire fight, because it takes too long"
If that starts happening we have an issue imo.
So far as long as you pay attention, all things were escapable and the only reason to get hit by plumes, was a lack of paying attention.
Side note: The topic implies everyone does NOT like animation lock but some people actually do..
Watching characters spaz out all day, skipping animations, is not my idea of immersion.
It really kills the environment.

Global cooldowns and animation lock aren't the same thing at all...

The distaste for animation lock has less to do with the restriction on how fast you could use abilities and more to do with the restriction on movement in content that required you be able to gtfo at a moments notice.
I personally prefer it over the gcd and sliding around while you do skills route though.

Because it was annoyed. Ifrit's battle for example, when I was a WHM, someone blamed me that I didn't move away from cracks cause of animation lock. It's what it made them thought I suck. =/

Most of the time, I try not to be this person, but in this instance I just can't help it. If you're on WHM and you couldn't avoid the cracks most of the time, then yes, you did suck. Part of the challenge of that fight was learning to time your spells correctly so that if he did cracks you could move immediately. There are times when you absolutely can't wait to cast, and those are the few times I'll grant that you're going to get hit.
While I hated how long animation lock was, I like the idea in general way better than GCD. Just personal preference. But in every game you learn to play with what you're given. If you can't and the majority of other people can (meaning game not broken), well, then you DO "suck" relative to them.

While I can agree with you how suck I did while being stuck during animation lock. Myself, I did Ifrit's battle many times and 80% of time I was a WHM and 20% of time I was a WAR (never tried a BLM tho) and I have my Ifrit's blade. With animation lock, no matter how good or bad you play, it called "trick." Like, when I started casting spell right before the floor was cracking.
Why can't we do like XI where you are allowed to interrupt your casting a spell?

You don't need to *slide* around. In another game they animated upper/lower body separately. so you could run around, and upper body would rotate, and attack; lower body would run. If you stand still and attack it's the normal animation.
I don't want animation-lock, cause it's just annoying being rooted for the duration of an attack; Maybe for some skills it would be ok, but in general no.
I think the GCD is ok. I think it will be somewhat of an non-issue at higher lv.
Animation lock was bad mostly for fights like Ifrit where you had to "dodge" attacks. Mages finishing a spell cast as the wrong time will kill them. This also applies you using WS at the wrong time. IMO Global cool down are not a fix nor is it inferior to Animation Lock. Global Cool downs are more like Spam prevention then anything else. They are 2 different solutions to 2 different problems.
