Massive influx of spam post beta application

Interestingly my friend who also has a FF XI/XIV account has not had any emails like this and I have. The only difference is that I applied for the XIV beta recently and he did not. Perhaps someone has somehow stolen personal information from the beta application website.

This has nothing to do with the beta. I got a couple dozen of these and never applied for the beta. I get one or two per week for WoW and Diablo III.

Most likely it's what someone else said. RMT after lucrative legacy/beta accounts. They're using FFXI because more people play that so it's a wider audience, and since XI and XIV accounts are linked to SE member accounts they can hit two birds with one stone.

Spammers often obtain e-mail addresses from other fansites and will use them to phish information to compromise your account. The theory about the mass-hackings in Diablo 3 stems from this as well; a hacker got into an unsecure website/forum and obtained a bunch of e-mails and brute forced the passwords of the people who didn't have authenticators.

Got a ton of these scam emails in my junk mail today. But it wasnt an email address i used for FFXI or FFXIV, i probbably did sign up on a fan site or two with it though. I've gotten WOW scam spam before and i never even played it so... yeah who knows.

I've yet to recieve them. I haven't been spammed yet.
