Massive influx of spam post beta application

It has come to my attention that a number of people have been getting flooded with spam emails from "Square Enix" over the last 24-hours. I'm just trying to touch base and see if any of you out there have been getting them as well?


I am aware that the email is in regards to Final Fantasy XI but I can't ignore the fact that forums and social media alike are blowing up with people getting these same 20+ emails in the last 24 hours. I have no clue if it's at all tied to the beta application or a security breach but it's worth asking around.

Please DO NOT click and/or follow the instructions given. This is simply a copy/paste of the email. Again, DO NOT FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS.

Anyone who got this email and followed the instructions should immediately change their password.

Normally I'd chalk it up to any other attempt - the reason I'm slightly more concerned about this is that I'm seeing dozens of people claiming the same thing from various countries.

Just hoping it's limited to emails only and not something on a larger scale.

Damn, that sounds like a definite phishing scam going on - you really should pass this onto Square Enix's Special Task Force. They'd be able to take this further, as I hate to think how many people would be easily duped by this (given a cursory glance it seems legitimate, but you just have to look at it a little closer and the fakery is obvious - the many typos and slightly bad grammar, and the incorrect URL for the SE Account Management System (it doesn't mention PlayOnline anymore).

I once got a couple of similar messages in /tells in FFXI a few years ago claiming to be from a GM saying that my account was 'under investigation for suspicious activities', then this obvious bot told me to login to a suspicious site and 'answer a survey' which basically gave the whole scam away. I ignored it and then turned on the chat filter - I was never bothered by it again.

So yeah, if anyone gets such a message, bin it without clicking that link, or better yet, get in touch with SE so that they can hopefully try and shut these scam artists down before people are conned.

I remember getting one of these last year. They've changed it a bit. The one I got mentioned what sections of the EULA I supposedly broke. Problem was it said I broke the Blizzard EULA. Wonder how many people actually think Blizzard makes FFXI lol.
