I don't remember seeing much advertising for FFXIV 1.0 actually
And I definately didn't see ANY advertising for FFXI and didn't even know about the game until I moved to UK where it was more popular (than Finland where I am from).

No more singing and stuff please SE. I don't think the majority of your fans likes that.

Yea, something like that or print a code on a coca cola bottle for a special in-game item (would've been available world-wide). Well I guess most of you think it's too early to start a big campaign but i guess we all agree that advertising needs to be BIG this time! I remember seeing this while watching Southpark ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1T3MNnml80 ). But that's nothing compared to the coca cola TV commercial

I was reading that big writeup about the history of FF the other day and it was interesting to find out that they spent a mind-blowing $100 million on their advertising campaign for FF7. I don't exactly expect this for a game that has a shaky future, but they will have to do something to attract other MMO players and FF fans alike.

The End of an Era trailer has gotten some people's hopes up, but with the way many MMOs are shifting away from P2P for various reasons, many people aren't willing to give ARR a chance due to that reason alone. I've read comments in other forums about if it were F2P or B2P that they'd be willing to give it a shot. Obviously this isn't something the majority of the playerbase wants, (or SE for that matter) but it's just a sad fact. This compounded with the failure of the first launch are a couple of factors that contribute to people that bought the game originally not coming back.

As others have mentioned, once the game goes into open beta when the NDA is no longer in effect would be the prime time to launch their global marketing campaign. Obviously it's easier for them to publicize this in Japan being that it's their native language, and they seem to be doing just that with the slew of interviews they give, both written and televised.

That ffix coco cola commercial was banned, and the xbox 360 ffxiii commercial, its interesting how microsoft or the advertising agency make it look like if it was an exclusive. lol. They need a big budget ad almost like ff7 and that ff3 one you included.

It was best in show at Gamescom.. not sure what else it was going against in the MMO market, but it was asked and Yoshi-P said they knew they needed to market the game better than SE normally does and they have a plan for that.

There was good reason for this. Final Fantasy 1.0 had investors and those investors had eyes.

If anyone can remember, sometime a little before---Or maybe it was after?---an investor pulled a lot of money out of the company in general solely based on the state of FFXIV. This can really hurt the game's advertising, but investors really come at a cost more than money and that is in opinion of the product that they are supporting. I don't blame investors what-so-ever for FFXIV 1.0's failure, but it is completely plausible that they were rushing to see a return on their investment making it more desperate for them to launch something.

The beauty of FFXIV:ARR is that it has zero investors. That means they can have creative freedom. FULL creative freedom and no one telling them how they spend the money. Or that, "We need a hot chick in it. Our polls show that hot chicks who sound dumb bring in oodles of cash." This also applies to their advertising campaign. Of course, they are on a budget in developmental costs, but I have WAY more faith in them running a good advertisement campaign at the right moment than I would if investor's hands were in the pot. I don't think people realize how much investors can muck up a game in situations like these.

EDIT: Also, nothing annoys me more than having someone whose job it isn't to be creative to tell others what is or is not creative, but since they have deposited some cash to help develop it, feel like it's their job anyway.
