It is because of the negative stigma from FFXI that I, to this day, feel invasive when I examine someone's gear, even though it's 99% of the time due to mere curiosity.

Everyone remember the "/em examines you." back in your ffxi days
You could still see if someone was checking you out in XIV, all you had to do is notice how their head pointed and moved, especially if they were close.
I don't see why this is necessary. All it seems to do is work at people's egos.
Exactly how I looked at it in XI. If you are constantly dying you are not dpsing and you are you are causing mages to raise you instead of keeping the tank alive.i hope gear score does not make it i think that bullshit and unfair. FFXI was great and i did just fine just like any other dps without having best gear i still did about the same or even better dps due to the fact that i don't die doing a high number then have to wait for 5min each time they die i gain more dps overall.
If there going to be a gearscore then so be it but i hope it does not become i can't enter/ do this dungeon without a 1.400 gear score points like wow.
Developers has experience from other foreign MMO's. XI was influenced by developers playing Everquest.
Now for most of the JP players, Final Fantasy XI was their first MMORPG to ever play. There was a large group of them that jumped in on the MMORPG wagon that they created their own etiquette rules how MMO should be played when most other foreign MMO's never really bothered.
It was made by developers in Japan, yes, but those developers most likely were OK with it, while majority of the JP community wasn't. There are so many weird JP rules players came up with and some of them make you go 'WTF!?' This /examine stuff was one of them for me.

I remember getting a lot of angry tells from specifically Japanese players, due to the way in which it was translated. The Japanese version is something like "stares at you" which is pretty dumb.
If they fix that, sure, otherwise don't show anything at all. I would prefer not to know that people constantly check my gear.
This would have to be an Optional Notification that has to be turned on. One of the most obnoxious things that ever happened in FFXI was when people freaked out and started /shouting because you checked their equipment. I'd really rather not have it abused, but I also like to know when people are checkin me out! ~.^
