Not sure if it's been said, but you had to buy a $100 HDD for the PS2 version and that thing wasn't so popular. Barely anyone had an HDD and so why make more expansions for something it won't sell on anyway? Japanese players had more PC versions than PS2 also.. I barely ran into a PS2 owning Japanese person.

And in NA FFXI was the only game to ever utilize that $100 HDD lol

HDLoader. While pulled from the market eventually, it was originally on sale as an unlicensed pressed disc. I'm sure most of you know what HDLoader is by now.

    HDLoader wasn't a game, it was a pirating/savedata utility

Had nothing to do with save data. Fact is, it wasn't for pirating either. It was for backing up your games. Sure, you could use it for piracy if you went to blockbuster or the likes. Fact remains, it was in NA, and it did use the HDD. Regardless if it was a game or not, it allowed other games to utilize the HDD.

Also, Resident Evil: Outbreak if you really want to be a bitch about it. ^^

Now we have ARR on the horizon. 1.0, at least, was written for and graced the PC first. Meanwhile, all indications are the next PlayStation will be announced by the time ARR hits shelves; and there's certainly no guarantee that Sony's next console will play PS3 games.

With the cards already stacked against the PS3 version, and with the history of FFXI showing that support for console versions will get axed well before the PC version, why is Square-Enix bothering with releasing the PS3 version of the game at all at this point? And why should players make the commitment of buying the PS3 version when history shows they'll just have to move to the PC eventually anyway?
Your face, why bother... lol j/k
Seriously though, being against this is being against more people playing that might not otherwise.

No, its not. I have HDLoader. The only thing the real HDLoader does, is allow you to backup games from pressed discs. Not burnt ones, and nothing to do with saves. If you're still going to tell me I'm wrong, I'll make a video, showing my disc, and ripping my ps2 apart to show no mod chip, take out the memory card and shit and show you.

You're talking about uLaunch and FreeMCBoot. Something completely different. Neither were ever released on a pressed disc, that played just by putting it in the drive like a ps2 game, without a mod chip. Also, there were many more games in NA that used the HDD for various features. Some sports games used it as well. Idr which ones tho.

Doh yea, guess I did clump em all 3 of those together, been so long ago.

I guess the reason I thought FFXI was the only game that used the HDD was because it was the only game that provided a HDD and Sony never distrubuted them individually. I did use my HDD a ton aside from FFXI, but just to store all my save files which was nice.

Yea, the fact that it showed up in the PS2 Browser to copy saves was nice. Too bad they never added a module to the elf the hdd loaded on boot to add the hdd as a load/save destination in games, rather than just to backup saves from the ps2 browser. I kept hopeing for a software update disc to add that function, but it never came

There's an untapped audience that's been waiting for FF14 for PS3 since it's been announced. I couldn't tell you what it costs them to convert their assets to work on the PS3, but being that it's "highly scalable" I'm sure it'll be offset within a reasonable amount of time with the subscribers it brings.
