Paladins towards the end of my own playing days began to subjob Ninja for that reason, for the shadows, sacraficing provoke and defender for the saftey net of not being a blood tank. When going up against certain HNMs that hit really really hard, the shadows were invalueable in keeping the tank alive. Its not a question of WHM skill either, if a WHM is spending all of their time just trying to manage a dying PLD's hp with non stop cure spam (which happens sometimes regardless), then their going to be incapable of dealing with other "oh shi-" moments when they pop up. And if a fight goes too far, Refresh will only manage so much to compensate the cure spam from the pld and the whm's. So Ninja was a great tank class, it honestly changed the entire way fights were approached when it became used that way.
Now, personally, I'd rather see the Ninja's of XIV take on a DD/Stealth like role rather than an tank role as well. Where the Ninja job is utalizing things like sneak attacks, smoke bombs, poison tipped shurikens and darts, etc. Making it into a pet class would be different.
