The dog could always be another battle pet like the Chocobo, after all FFVI wasn't the only FF with dog companions.

Rinoa + Angelo FFVIII
Yojimbo + Daigoro FFX
Gilgamesh + Enkidu FFXII

Not that i would be against a pet using Ninja though could quite interesting....
