The dog could always be another battle pet like the Chocobo, after all FFVI wasn't the only FF with dog companions.
Rinoa + Angelo FFVIII
Yojimbo + Daigoro FFX
Gilgamesh + Enkidu FFXII
Not that i would be against a pet using Ninja though could quite interesting....
A little bit of a wild suggestion but... you could make beastmaster a cross job/class ability set....
Like if you level beastmaster you learn how to tame and raise animals- almost a job that is also a crafting/gathering job.
You can then subslot your call ability to another class / job and call pets - however main job beastmaster would allow access to many exclusive / powerful pet skills that make it still a viable job, and perhaps you have to tame the animal completely before you can use it in other jobs.
Like I said pretty weird. . Without enough nerfing or enough comparable skills I'm pretty sure everyone would sub the beastmaster call ability though.. Perhaps if you sub the skill the pet takes up 1 party slot - so you can go solo content as a bard / wolf combo or something (but its not used in large parties as much and besides a beastmasters pet being far more powerful it wouldn't take up two slots (you and the pet)).
I only think this makes some sense because I would think the beastmaster will need a class to lead up into him, so a keeper class with the call skill- and beastmaster is the main job.

If for some reason Yoshi P decides to follow the FF6 route of ninja, I guess it could be a pet class? Though Interceptor only came out every once in a while, and it didn't really have to do with his job at all, more of a story thing, seeing that if you didn't get Shadow back, Relm would have control over him..... But if Yoshi P did follow the FF6 guide to ninja, it would mean we would be allowed to chuck a bunch of weapons at monsters and do massive amounts of damage... which would be awesome! (but 99% sure that isn't going to happen)
Why would a ninja have a pet dog? x.x Doesn't seem to make much sense xD. I prefer Ninjas being a hybrid class, being able to use sub-par elemental damage skills through ninjutsu, as well as able to do some DD from behind the enemy. Possibly give them a few skills to bypass enemies that aggro as well.
The Ninja in Final Fantasy VI had a dog, sorta like a tribute, and you just described FFXI ninja in detail lolWhy would a ninja have a pet dog? x.x Doesn't seem to make much sense xD. I like the idea of nin as a pet job but I have to disagree with nin being a good tank job on FFXI, nins have no def lack true hate holding skills (minus provoke with war sub) and a good pld could out tank a nin tank if they knew how to work hate..not hating nin tanks but I have seen alot of them fail...(of course it might have been player skill rather then job at that point but hey..)

Sadly, you're mistaken, very, very mistaken. While its true Ninja didnt have any outright enmity generating abilities like Flash or Cure as PLD had, Ninja could subjob Warrior to utalize Provoke. The thing that made Ninja so viable as a tank class were the Utsusemi Shadows, allowing you to bypass attacks completely, that and Ninjas have a damn good native evasion as well. Paladins towards the end of my own playing days began to subjob Ninja for that reason, for the shadows, sacraficing provoke and defender for the saftey net of not being a blood tank. When going up against certain HNMs that hit really really hard, the shadows were invalueable in keeping the tank alive. Its not a question of WHM skill either, if a WHM is spending all of their time just trying to manage a dying PLD's hp with non stop cure spam (which happens sometimes regardless), then their going to be incapable of dealing with other "oh shi-" moments when they pop up. And if a fight goes too far, Refresh will only manage so much to compensate the cure spam from the pld and the whm's. So Ninja was a great tank class, it honestly changed the entire way fights were approached when it became used that way.I like the idea of nin as a pet job but I have to disagree with nin being a good tank job on FFXI, nins have no def lack true hate holding skills (minus provoke with war sub) and a good pld could out tank a nin tank if they knew how to work hate..not hating nin tanks but I have seen alot of them fail...(of course it might have been player skill rather then job at that point but hey..)
Now, personally, I'd rather see the Ninja's of XIV take on a DD/Stealth like role rather than an tank role as well. Where the Ninja job is utalizing things like sneak attacks, smoke bombs, poison tipped shurikens and darts, etc. Making it into a pet class would be different.
