I was wondering about that. For some reason, to me, it just doesn't seem like it fits well with the rest of the picture. I think maybe it is a way of saying that he is brand new and refreshed.

Well it does tie in with the year of the snake (snakes shed their skin.) and it also ties in with renewal as was mentioned earlier; figuratively, Yoshi-P (and ffxiv) are shedding their proverbial skins for the new launch.

A benchmark can take a variety of forms. They could release a Character Creation benchmark then.

It was already confirmed it would come before shortly before ARR releases.

Yes they come in all forms but it's been confirmed which is which and when.

My inactive character subscriptions are set to end on that date, and they've been set to end on that date since last save, so they've apparently had this date in the works for quite some time.

Edit: actually it's the 5th but close enough.

My inactive slots say January 5. My main not-to-delete says March 31.

I'm not sure what these deletion dates would have to do with this announcement though.
