Totally agreed. Games that don't necessitate a specific tank class normally suck big time and have battles that lack depth in a major way.God, I hope not. This is the current issue with XI. Paladin is on the backburner because every other melee job short of DRK is capable of tanking a good majority of the content. And SE refuses to give PLD any sort of true, comparable DD potential out of fear of making it immortal and broken. (Which is a fair argument considering the capabilities of XI PLD).
I'd rather WAR and PLD be the specific tanks and the only ones capable of tanking things.
On a side note, good to see that they brought Mindflayers back.
This is one of the few things i don't like about SE...they refuse to accept the Tank concept of other games that keep a monster's attention 100% no matter what...
Well having this ability makes a good tank... it promotes mediocre players to practice and become great players...
It's fun but in this FFXI re-used system of hate cap that is reached much faster by optimal geared DDs ..not so much...they need to give PLD abilities that caps hate faster than a WS or a nuke can specially in ARR that DDs will start fights with full TP ..and also give PLD a hate cap 10-20%+ bigger than the rest

It works just fine in XIV. Spirit's Within does it's job beautifully, and a lot of the hate control is in the Paladin's hands (outside of fights with stupid hate resets.)
In fact, I'm unaware of a hard enmity cap in this game. BLMs keep nuking, DRGs keep WS'ing and I keep hate.
