So far as I know he had eluded to the story of the crystals connection to the primals and the twelve, as well as the Garlean forces. He will be having some recent history tidbits for us 1.0 survivors to go "Hey! I was there!" but he will be going with a slightly revised version of the original story that was intended for the game. With a bit of his own twist and flare for good measure.
Dalamud wasn't red until patch 1.19, which was released on September 29, 2011. Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) made his first Letter From the Producer on January 21, 2011.

Unless this was a plot device the team already planned on using later in the games life, it was pretty improvised. The moon turned red roughly 8 months after Yoshi-P took charge.
