I think incapacitation is one game mechanic, if reworked a little, could be much more interesting than it is now.
First, I'll start pointing out why I think it needs to be tweaked a little.
I noticed one particular flaw while during the Great Buffalo NM encounter. As a Marauder, my primary task involved breaking the left horn by using Brutal Swing II from the left. While this is an enjoyable departure from most battles and certainly involves a small degree of tactics, I was not wildly impressed with what the fight became.
Just to summarize the fight: 1 1 1 1 1 (1000TP) Brutal Swing II Repeat several times until horn is destroyed.
Despite the incredibly gratifying experience of actually snapping the horn off, the fight itself was extremely boring and seemingly odd for a few reasons. Particularly odd was how I was never actually in range of the horn itself. I just used a certain ability on its left hind leg several times, with the end result of the horn sputtering off its head. Often times I never even had the horn on my camera, as it was relatively far away. To say the least, it felt gimmicky.
I would just like the time to suggest a few things that might fix this situation.
Separate the parts of a monster via different targettable parts. This would mean, in the Great Buffalo's Case, you would have a separate target for Great Buffalo's Legs, Horns, and ofcourse the Great Buffalo itself.Take away each ability's hidden break effect.
The reason for this is, you would then have to target the specific parts, be within range of the parts, and you camera would be focussed on the parts.
Obviously this would then mean every ability would be capable of damaging these parts.
This may not be a popular idea, but I think it would be much simpler to allow players to break parts by simply standing either in the correct position or target the correct part, and then proceed to use whatever abilities they prefer.
For example, fighting and breaking an Aldgoat horn would still require you to stand in front of the monster, your chat log would not tell you directly how much damage you are doing to the horns, and after a certain amount of damage, the horns would simply break off.
I believe this is far more intuitive than involving specific abilities for specific directions for specific parts.
