this is from my test over the years yours may differ. im rating all on 1080p
all of them will get you big files you will get you about 1h 30min on a 500gb drive 1080p
other recorders like playclaw & dxtory let you compress video. side effects will be the video will be dark and hard to un-compress. if you run compress video threw something like abode primere, sony vegas will will render with skipping alot of frames. run it threw abobe after effect first will will fix it but takes forever.
dxtory needs/favors fast HDD raid 0 would work or faster then 62MB a sec HDD to run without skipping(1080p), lots of options with codec selection.
fraps likes a decently fast CPU/GPU system, then no problems at all, basic options
playclaw easiest on your system but have dark pixelated compressed videos, lots of options
For me FRAPS wins hands down but thats just what i like there all good just try all 3.

Fraps is, without a doubt, the best recording software out there for this sort of thing. And yes, it's best to get extra GB for your computer for it. Like myself, who got a usb hard drive for $50. VERY usefull
2TB HD and two portable HD's here \'-'/ I've got all the room for recordings, Thancred pr0...wait um..Thancred pics <_<... among other things!

I used Fraps years ago but Bandicam has been better for me and my limited SSD space![]()
I would agree with the fraps+handbake suggestion. In the end fraps is designed to offer the best output quality, that then you can compress how you want retaining total control on your options.
A recorder that outputs already compressed footage is problematic, because you can't see the quality until the recording is done.
Agreed. Working with raws is always the best for just about anything. Since Fraps records uncompressed, you know you're getting exactly what you see on your screen. The only downside of course, is the humongous file sizes.I would agree with the fraps+handbake suggestion. With recording directly to compressed formats, you don't know what you'll be getting, especially in footage where there's lots of movement (action scenes etc)

Yep, it works so well that I don't even bother taking screenshots anymore. I just record gameplay and then take screenshots from thatCan get some pretty sweet ones from what I record with fraps.
like these gems that usually fly by too fast to appreciate the lulz-worthiness:
