Alpha First Look: Video 6 – Gathering and Crafting

Exactly.. I can't believe how many people are getting behind this and tagging it as "fun"....

Really? You want x, go up to tree and get x... So hard, so much fun... Why not just make it a vending machine

They didn't show how tree's share a global cool down and the crazy competition/qq it sparks.... or they also don't show any of the abilities you get beyond the first one....

and what's wrong with gathering materials, instead of playing mini game? what's fun with wasting time, randomly gathering materials you dont need? it was vending machine before too, except with additional junk you dont want. i'm sure you still will anyways, cause i assume not all materials can be found in any 1 area.
they also didnt show all the lancer skills either, what's your point? they wanted to show what crafting and gathering looks like; not skills, or people QQ over nodes.

See I agree. In 1.0 I didn't mind that you had to discern what it was based on the amount of bar it had. If bar is in area 4 at start, chop in section 3, notch 4 to get a log. Chop....ash branch..wtf? I don't have the ingredients to make stuff with an ash branch, I'm planning to make stuff with logs ARGH.

The video shows 80% on all the items so I'm assuming that you click what you want and each item has an 80% rate of drop. Now I can specifically target my ash logs and continue whacking away. Yes I might miss, like that guy missed on the wind shard, but it looks like you've got at least 5 harvests so there's plenty tries. ME LIKEY!

To the guy saying it's a vending machine. Now we may have a vending machine, but before we had a put your quarter in and hope you get what you want. Because if you didn't use third party sites to figure out what you wanted, you weren't getting it. Which I didn't mind, but some people may.

ya, and worst case scenario in 1.0 was trying to get catalysts, if you didnt visit some site, and knew they only drop in Thanalaan. i gathered like 300+ nodes in Limsa trying to get any. so either visit a site, or explore all nodes in the world, printing down what they drop im thinking it will still be like that, so you'll need to go to a specific map, to get some certain material. but at least you'll see that you CAN get it.

Then you can close your eyes and push the down button at random and hit the x button. It's the same thing.

ya being spoonfed stuff you dont like is much better, just for the sake of feeling special?
you're still gonna need to grind up your class level, and fail to gather a lot. so you're overdramatizing things.
It didnt need any skill before, you just needed to know what nodes dropped what, and where to chop. but if making a simple timed chop is skill to you...well good for you that you enjoyed that.
Actually it was easier before, since you ALWAYS got something if you knew where to chop. now it's X% chance, so you'll always risk not getting anything.

How exactly are you linking inconvenience with skill? 1.0 is NO different then the video. Except the theory craft and speculation is no longer needed...

I have to agree, and I am even more surprised by the sheer quantity of people on this thread that seem excited by it. No minigame, no skill required, just click the item you want now. I'd bring it up with Yoshi-P to change it back to a system that actually presents a challenge and requires skill, but chances are I'd be overruled by the sheer quantity of people who don't seem to want any kind of challenge or effort with DoL at all.
