Basically, I'd just like to know if I should uninstall the game or not. As ARR will be shipped out to retailers as a brand new game, will those of us who have the original game simply just need to download a large patch file on launch day, or is it going to be an entirely new client in which case there'd be no point to keeping the original.

Some clarification would be greatly appreciated as I don't want the original client to interfere with things (for example, in the original beta we were told to uninstall it after release of the main game) and it takes up a large chunk of space on my drive.
Devs already answered this a while back. You're free to uninstall if you don't wish to play the 1.0 client anymore.

If it was me, (and I have a lot of space in my computer) I'm leaving 1.0 alone until the full version of ARR is installed and all my character data is transfer, just to play it safe.
Your character data isn't stored on your hard drive. There is nothing to "play it safe" with. SE said you can uninstall, so you can uninstall. Uninstalling will leave behind your screenshots and other files created by the game anyway, so there is absolutely no reason not to uninstall unless you're just sentimental.
