I'd go crazy if I had to play another MMO with sh!tload of menus .... The steps to playing FFXI was:
- Find a camp and sit there.
- Stand in position while someone runs out and pulls a mob back to you.
- Hold your position around the mob and auto attack.
- Every now and then perform abilities as needed.
- Mob dies, rinse and repeat
The menu system worked very well for this setup and I loved it... however in FFXIV or any other game, I'd jump out a window before using it again.
I would definitely use this system if I had the option in XIV...I'd go crazy if I had to play another MMO with sh!tload of menus .... The steps to playing FFXI was:

Skill wise a ui bar will be better, faster. Menus are just slow. A nostalgia addon could be fun though.
Hey, well.. I found out the UI is made with Scaleform (something I know how to develop with). When SE releases the UI SDK, maybe some community UI moders can add menu mods to the (coming soon) FFXIVMods.com

The slower pace was never an issue when we used skillchains and magic burst...
Tell you what, when UI addons come about, you can make your own menu-based UI.
But make sure you add an automatic party warning that you're using it.
So I know never to party with you again.
menu = words = different languages around the globe = different text length = messy UI.
Icons = same size for all languages = clean UI.
