How do I claim my FFXIII bonus item?

OK, so I found this page which gave me a code I I had to enter on the FFXIV account site. I entered it and it looked like the code was accepted however, when I loged into the game I still did not have the Armguards in my inventory.

Bonus items are only added to the inventory of a newly created character. If you created the character before you registered the Asuran Armguards code, then the character will not have them. To receive them you must create a new character.
