I hear ya ;~;. I feel like we've been backed into a corner here :/I'm afraid there're not very many of us. The number of people who hated fishing in 1.0 and are happy that this is the way Yoshi is going with fishing and gathering in general are much bigger than the number of true Gatherers, and they're louder as well. This will likely all get washed out because "lol who cares about gathering stupid go fight something lol if you want to fish go fish in real life lol."
Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of another, always at the same time as an end and never simply as a means
That's the thing, fishing won't work. There won't be any work at all. Who are you to tell us how to play the game? I'm really tired of everyone picking on gatherers just because "lol you aren't fighting." I found combat boring. The only combat class I cared about was Pugilist/Monk, but given the chance I'd choose fishing every time. It was something I was good at, it was relaxing, it helped my friends a lot with shards and cooking and, later, hamlets, and it made me really enjoy the game. Thanks to fishing I was able to play the game from open beta all the way to when they turned off the servers without ever being bored. I'm not sure I could have ever said the same for combat.
I chose fishing to be my major task in this MMO. A lot of fellow gatherers feel the same. It's what we enjoyed doing, and it's what we all hoped to continue enjoying in ARR. Now it looks like fishing has been removed from the roster completely, because I can assure you anyone who actually enjoyed fishing in 1.0, or even XI, will not like this new "system." It's the old XI system, so I'm told. A system that even the old FFXI game thinks is outdated. Who in their right mind would ever think this is a good idea for a "global standard MMO" from 2013?
I only became interested in fishing after Llen Coram made some comments about it in other threads (thank you for unleashing my fisher's spirit, by the way). Then I realized, while playing a different video game, that I really enjoy and prefer to gather/craft things (mostly gather). I was and am still hoping that FFXIV will be my one-stop shop for such activities.
With that said, and I don't mean to be needlessly negative, I felt deflated by the response that the translator said Yoshi-P gave.
Maybe he mistranslated?
I obviously need to try it first before I pass any final judgments (as it should be). I only wanted to chime in to say my reaction to Yoshi-P's translated answer and to give my support to this thread.
I feel uneasy even saying this, especially if it breeds malicious content toward the developers. I love you Yoshi-P and your team.
Aside: I love to fish IRL but I stopped doing it as I grew older because I felt bad for the fishies. That is why I would like to have a fishing option that I can truly enjoy in a different reality. That must sound silly, I suppose!
Okay I am done now good bye.
You're right, I apologize. I'm furious and heartbroken at this news, and I'm taking it out on everything around me. The fact that others might actually like this new system scares me, because it weakens any chance the rest of have that it could be changed for the better. As it stands, I have no hope whatsoever that fishing will ever be what I want it to be.
A friend of mine is interpreting "no actions during the fishing process" to mean that we won't have Gathering skills, like botanists can fire off while chopping. Despite that, he says we'll still likely have to fight the fish, in a system similar to what XI has (the newer one, not the old one). While I hope and pray he's right, because at this point anything is better than "stand around and wait," I'm not optimistic enough to imagine it's true.
Even if it were true, the loss of gathering skills while fishing is still pretty lamentable. What about legendary fish? What about finding a remote fishing hole with really rare fish that take actual skill to find? What about being able to set up next to a bunch of new fishers in a well-known watering hole, and pulling up some really rare fish right next to them, while they're busy pulling up common stuff. Without gathering skills, I can't see how it'll ever be anything more than a shallow thing to do.

He did mention that the type of rod used would affect fishing, so there has to be some kind of game mechanics behind it all, meaning it won't be completely 'shallow' (was that a pun, Llen?)
I'm not going to write it off until I've seen it in action, though.
I'll definitely check it out in phase 3, but I'm not going to get my hopes up.
