I tried going back recently, a week or so, the only people that seem to be on are the hardcore players as usual. I noticed the only shouts were new content, so I looked it up and realized I'd not only have to get a new expansion to play with them I'd have to do a giant laundry list of pre-requisites I'll most likely never find help doing because theres a bajillion things to do in ffxi and it just doesnt have the playerbase anymore.

Maybe I'll finish my paying month out leveling BLU, I never have, and always wanted to. I'll do it the ole fashioned way. dunes. After that I may just delete the char to stop temptation..

I may never delete my character on FFXI. He has so many memories that I've had with friends. My one LS leader helped me get Ifrit for SMN, and he died a month or so later due to a heart-attack.

The most amusing things I have seen are

lvl 99 thieves asking "I keep getting a msg in my log about treasure hunter, wtf is that?"
lvl 99 pups who dont even have their animator on them because they dont use manuvers
lvl 99 mages who dont know what <stpt> and <stal> are and just using f and tab keys to target for heals and buffs
lvl 99 sch who never even bothered to get thier weather scrolls and have no idea what weathers do

the list goes on. There are alot of basics for each class that are important to that class which people just simply don't learn anymore and there are no ls or vet players willing to teach them.
Don't tell that to the people who insist "you don't learn anything while leveling up". They'll rip your head off and rage with indignation. According to them, the lower levels are pointless, you learn nothing, and everything is learned at end-game. You know, when the inexperience and lack of Job knowledge becomes most apparent and most disruptive to everyone else.

The proof is in the playing. In any given party, I could tell you who played and actively learned their jobs and who leveled by playing whack-a-mole in a PL'd party. All it took was them saying something about the Dunes being impossible to get through without a PL and I knew what to expect; and I was never wrong. There's nothing quite like seeing a level 70 character making level 15 mistakes because they never had the opportunity to learn from that mistake 55 levels earlier when they should have.

'course, a common response to that is "power-leveling has nothing to do with it. People can have leveled up the normal way and still suck". Of course they can. It's not an "either/or" situation. There are some people I've played with who sucked even though they knew the job simply because they didn't care, or were watching Anime or whatever.

It's just far less likely that someone who's put the time into joining parties, fighting a wide variety of mobs in a variety of party setups is going to suck, than it is for someone who spent most of their leveling time playing whack-a-mole with a mob while an out-of-party Tank kept them safe. No need for hate control, no need for mages to manage MP or control their damage/healing output, etc. Just stand there and beat the things 'til they're dead.

It also gave people false expectations of what they could handle, and robbed them of ever learning and understanding the mobs. This goes back to the "you can't get through The Dunes without a PL" argument. I used to wonder why they said that. Then, one day, I found out when I joined a group who, at level 12-13 thought we could take on Pugils without help. Can you guess what happened? If you said "you wiped horribly" you get the prize. Can you guess what happened next? If you said "people refused to continue without a PL", you win again. I tried to speak up and say "well, we are under-leveled to be fighting these". Can you guess what the response was? If you said "you were told you didn't know what you're talking about and "learn to play"", you've scored a hat trick!

That's one, of many, situations in XI where players were their own worst enemies -as they commonly are.

People go through the game completely ignorant to so many of the fundamental aspects of playing it, and then blame the developers for it.

    Anyway...

I'm back in XI now and am loving it. It took me time to get to that point, as I was one of those who believed Abyssea destroyed the game wouldn't touch it again. I still think Abyssea destroyed the game. The difference is that I think time and distance away from it has sorta "softened" the disdain a bit.

Plus, I have friends playing who've told me ways to level up without getting involved in any of the PL nonsense. 'course, others in the game have insisted that PL'ing is "the only way you'll be able to progress" - but then, a lot of people in XI have always had severe tunnel-vision, believing that there's only one "right way" to do anything, and anyone who didn't do it that way was a "n00b" who has to learn to play. Whatever. I just ignore them. Always have.

I'm working on some jobs I never played much at all "way back when", am working up through the levels and having fun again.

It's great to be back. Like slipping into an old, comfortable pair of slippers.

i just went back on a new character on Asura 2 days ago.
leveling is crazy fast im a lv40 bst and that in 2 days. im done with the 3 promys. AH is dead on anything less then lv60 for equip. partying is using weak mobs and raping fields of valor pages to xp from.
areas people XP way different(think stronghold partys from FFXIV with less mobs at a time). as a old player it nice to zoom past the boring stuff.

it stil the same game but people figured out how to XP faster with crappy equip on the low levels since no one makes anything for the low levels and no one cares. i still need to learn abyessa when i get high enough anything post lv75 i dont know anything about.

If you need gear Im on Asura too and have all my crafts to at least 50, except gold/blacksmith which are in the 20s so I can make you a few things. I put things up low lvl when I can as its better than just npc random things. Also if you get stuck on something just send me a /t and if Im at my puter or not in the middle of a fight I will respond... Fiyaro is my ffxi name on Asura
