These illustrations are a good example of the Musketeer (class) > Red Mage (job) path.
I suspect that is the path the devs will take with it.
The style is very Akihiko Yoshida inspired~ I like it.
I'm starting to wonder if they might actually do MSK > RDM. It seems a lot more popular than I thought it would be.
I'd be ok with that.
EDIT: Also, I would wear the hell out of those outfits. Some pants would be nice on the RDM concept, but otherwise it's gorgeous.
You'd probably have to require the job to equip a main hand and offhand weapon to work that way. Though I feel we are still confusing the precursor to the modern rifleman with a guy that wears a pimp hat and wields a rapier.
* The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
* Design ideas:
Red Mage - COMPLETE (https://tinyurl.com/y6tsbnjh), Chemist - Second Pass (https://tinyurl.com/ssuog88), Thief - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/vdjpkoa), Rune Fencer - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/y3fomdp2)
In Zant's case, I think she does mean for Musketeer (rifleman/pistols/whatever) to go to Red Mage though. Having a shooty redmage would be interesting, and if they go the path of enfeebles/buffs like in XI, a shooty redmage would be similar to FFTA2's Cannoneer class.
I'd be perfectly with magic bullets myself.
All I know is that design is amazing and I seem to have wet myself as a result.
I think it's more Fencer than RDM. RDM is most likely the last job they will add, it's so unimportant compared to: Summoner, Musketeer, Thief, or Ranger.
It's kinda cool how fanmade artwork of this caliber can not only garner wide approval, but spur discussion and speculation, haha. I think the artist would be flattered.
As others have pointed out, the kanji reads "mahou kenshi" a job which has appeared in Final Fantasy titles over the years, known in English as "Mystic Knight," "Spellblade," "Spell Fencer," and commonly translated as "Magic Swordsman." Mystic Knights have the ability to imbue their weapons with magical properties. The artist/designer has foregone naming the design "akamadoushi" (Red Mage); however, the resemblance to an archetypical FF Red Mage is apparent (medium, red armor; feather-tipped hat; one-handed sword).
Of note, in one of his responses, Yoshida has stated that currently the Monk job plays too much like "mahou kenshi" so they decided to overhaul its play style.
Um.. A Musketeer is a French Soldier who is perficient with Rapiers and Flintlock Pistols..
