i personally hate this type of stuff. it's not needed. it makes you feel like you have to use them. in warhammer was the only mmo i have played that had them and it annoyed me that i had to log into curse to download these things to get the same edge and feel for the game others are getting. plus ps3 plays with us so i don't see this even being fair at all having if they can't use it. but either way i just hate synergy and extra things in mmo's that aren't part of the actual game. it's not necessary and forcing it upon people sucks.

There is no good reason for arguing against SE bringing out an addon dev kit as eairly as possible.
Please tell me a addon that you would need that not added to the game? The only think would be dps and people would not need that too lets say level 50 and i'm guessing that would take someone month or more seeing how new players joining are casual players.

Addon are noting i hope it does not become a big thing i dislike if a endgame told me use this addon or you not comming. Seeing how the PS3 can't use addon i say that it would be a big deal seeing how it only ui base also.

I'm not sure we need them as the game launches, but they'll be a flood of them not soon after that functionality is added in. Depending on how much you can do with them, I have a couple of nifty ideas I want to try out. Yet another thing I'm looking forward to in FFXIV:ARR launch.

For DPS players who care about their DPS in any MMO including FFXIV:ARR a dps meter addon is a must, there is no arguing this fact.
Translation: I need a program to tell me if im doing it right...

You dont need a parser to tell you if you are doing a lot of dmg.. the numbers come up in game, but its too hard to pay attention right? And you use parser to judge others? I guess if you really lack the confidence to play without this I understand your plight, but itll be ok. If it helps ill stand there and tell you that you are dealing good dmg!

Found myself clicking "like" on Elexia's posts here, which surprised me... but now I have to quote this one, and change one letter to illustrate my first thought:

There is never a "need" for any add-on at all. I have played several MMO's that people say you needed some various form of add-on and never used it and did just fine. The fact that people are saying that you can't play a role without a add-on is just sad.

Sorry to the nay sayers, but I believe I need to agree with the OP on this issue. Y-P has already mentioned months ago there will be information in ARR's UI that will need us to create our own custom UI interfaces, such additional combat related info.

Unless this is going to happen by magic, I fail to see how it can happen w/o add-ons/tools.

In addition, if the API SDK is well done (versions down the road), there can be wealth of in-game information that website developers can extract and make ARR fan sites much more useful. IE: item price trends, sales history, in-box notices, guild events. mob drops/rates ... are just some of the possibilities.

I do agree that this will require additional time and by beta is siding w being insane, but then, the devs aren't programming w/ pens and pencils either. It is time to move FFVIX away from that old single player functionality era and bring in other interface possibilities to make the game a world class MMO.

If you look at MMOs with addon capabilities what are the common ones?

    1. Threat Meter, aka Enmity Meter - XIV 1.0 has one and ARR has two of them.
    2. DPS Meter - This isn't necessary nor is it necessary at launch because people force these meters onto players. Reason it's not necessary? If you know how to play your job your don't need an add-on to tell you where/why you suck.
    3. "Warning" Notifications - This is one of the "play the game for you" addons that doesn't need to exist, ever. It tells you what move an enemy is about to do and how/when to dodge/counter it.
    4. "Added Windows" - There's more than enough on ARR's Screen.

So having addons is nice, but it's not a need. It's a want...which is something this community confuses in concept very heavily.

there can be wealth of in-game information that website developers can extract and make ARR fan sites much more useful. IE: item price trends, sales history, in-box notices, guild events. mob drops/rates ... are just some of the possibilities.
FYI: FFXI had plenty of websites that did this using the old fashioned method of using your brain and calculating. So unless I've played the wrong game, I'm pretty sure I didn't need to install any addons to utilize those websites that tracks that data, nor did I need it to see when an enemy is about to to do an attack or when I get a tell or message.

    www.ffxiah.com for example.

It is time to move FFXIV away from that old single player functionality era and bring in other interface possibilities to make the game a world class MMO.
Actually, keeping it a "Single Player" is what will make this Final Fantasy. It will be an MMO but it will (should) have the feel of the Final Fantasy games while being an MMORPG much like FFXI, it was community driven where you depended on people (you know, like a FF game your characters always depended on each other?). Doing otherwise you're basically stating SE should make this like every other lifeless MMO on the market, which they are doing so don't worry, and by lifeless I mean one that's devoid of a good community.

Why play ARR when you can play other established and sometimes free MMOs for the same experience? So really, having it is nice but it's a far cry from a need. Most MMOs need add-ons because their default design is horrible. Very few MMOs I've played for example actually told you an enemy is even readying an attack, i .e "(Boss) readies/uses Painful Head Smash", this is why that addon even exists.
