I could see it lasting awhile just on the basis of farming the relic stones, but other than that..

Campaign/Beseiged offered the chance at loot and exp...but both were eclipsed by newer, faster systems of obtaining gear and loot. So now, a lot of those zones sit empty, abandoned, with beastmen controlling just about every zone (at least on Phoenix server lol)
This happens for everything though... Gear, dungeons, quests (where possible). If and when SE wants to expand a system like this they can just lock the old hamlets as safe or include them in the stages of the next hamlets, castles towns or what have you.

I agree it's frustrating 5 years from now there aren't enough people to do fun old things but that can be solved through dynamic scaling , patches , and overall attention to its players. It shouldn't be a reason why you don't design content in the now.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfkMB5uvJ0s this vid shows the gist of campaign battles, around 5mins in i would skip to and you can really see a bunch of the npc's and the mobs fighting each other better.(but it is way bigger, the area is full of fighst like this with usually multiple types of mobs and then bosses start rolling in too) but basically this topic sounds just like campaign battles witch truthfully i always thought ffxiv would have in it right from the get go as content. i think the messed up servers and they ended up with besiege and hamlets that they had to squeeze in our weapons into it.

but i'm picturing the new version in 2.0 being like campaign battles. we jump to the one that is ready to fight(aka the npc monsters are strong enough to fight and are on way) they show up and it's waves of mobs, lots of them ...all have many types of classes and moves. mini bosses and kick ass mobs in the waves as they come. you win or lose and it ends. you got exp and signet points from it( we will probably get something else but in that jyst on top of our weapon seals and rewards) then you warped to the next battle ...we only had 3 in ffxiv1.XX but think about it there was so many of these hamlet in each zone that probably was supposed to slowly get added in some to the point where they would of had as many as ffxi had. a continuous flow of them.

but lol enough rambling. campaign battles were fun, but it was missing something after awhile. but if they make you feel like your always progressing from them i'd do them all the time. in ffxi if the exp was up to par with regular grinds in that game everyone would of done them in campaign battles. i'm sure this is what they truly intended with hamlets from the get go even b4 yoshi and tanaka was in control.

i dunno but some reason i think even though it will be just as hard to get seals % wise it might be easier for people to get theres when it becomes open world. but i personally think this is just the start of what our weapon will grow into as we level and the game gets patched and expansions.

Thanks for the link and the explanation. While I did play FFXI it was my first MMO and I didn't get as involved in the community aspect and my experience suffered from that. I don't think I even had a linkshell that I would call active so I didn't participate in all the groovy stuff like Campaign and Besieged.

This is good, then there is already a precedence for this concept. Something that would be nice to build on and make it more suitable for ARR. I think the only difference between this and what I was saying is Campaign is an instance and when its done you warp out and its as if the rest of the world does not even notice. I would like it to be more of a call to arms, real time, non-instanced event.

I've been playing PSO2 and in it they have this thing where you need to defend the ships, a notice pops up on your screen no matter where you are, saying they need troops to help defend. you can then leave and head for the defense quest. The notification that something is going on is about the only thing I would take from that example though. The rest I would equate to the GW2 ATE that pop up at random, you see a circle on your map and see people kicking the crap outta baddies.

It wouldnt be every outpost attacked at once either, maybe one per GC area? each week is a different GC's turn to defend? I dunno. I just wonder what kind of theory talks the Devs have and have had throughout this whole process of rebuilding. Sad as it sounds, I would love bonus DVD's in the new CE to have Dev meeting recordings. I love weird shit like that.

What I think would be really fun would be if they were instanced. Mabe the npcs could attack and you the player just heal them and use doh/dol to aid in other ways. Maybe dol can gather invisible items from small pots and kite mobs fr 30 minutes non stop while crafters can craft the same item over and over again and turn them into an npc. Man this is starting to sound really exciting, they should def do this.

Why would they need to be instanced? That would encourage the "not enough players" feeling and make making it dynamic, harder.

In some cases it is. Specially when it isnt really offering useful to the thread (and is negative)

"Mabe the npcs could attack and you the player just heal them and use doh/dol to aid in other ways. is all the problems of the original hamlet. These are issues that should be addressed (not here) but shouldn't be automatically attributed to the OPs suggestion unless the OP suggested it.

    "Oh you want flying?

I guess you also mean to include stupid ass content handed to you on a silver platter just like WoW."

No.. conversations shouldn't go like that.

What if the hamlets where build really well and was made into mini city states that FCs ran and defended? now you got something...little cities that can be raided by mobs or other FCs that want the land for their GC! It would add a new twist to the game and make hamlet defense fun and lots a role playing ops opened up (for Role players)

FC owned hamlets? That may be too micro PvP for FFXIV (Yoshida said that he wont make PvP too front stage because he knows we are mostly lovely snurbles)

But it could be interesting to have fortified FC PvP (like building a FC house but.. a fortress instead). Definitely worth a thought.
