The best thing from the interview:

What was important in his eyes is how early RPGs borrowed the best elements from and influenced each other. That's how the genre advanced and made new games. "Unless you are a genius, you cannot make something completely new from nothing."

Funny how people say it's okay that XIV takes from XI, a successful mmo in their opinion and they accept it. But bash the idea of taking from an mmo that has been a world wide success. (WoW).

And the things Yoshida listed, "cutscenes, dramatic scenarios, and story-driven content", don't involve gameplay/battle mechanics. XI looks boring in that department but I guess it was the standard at the time.

I played WoW since the first one came out. I don't feel like typing a lot but here's the jist of it... I liked the game a lot. Burning Crusade came out (first expansion) still loving it. Then Wrath of the Lich King.. why is this so easy? Oh well, maybe next time? Cataclysm. Everyones standing in town teleporting to overly easy dungeons.

The only thing that kept me for so long were the friends I made during the years. The game deteriorated in my opinion. I'm dying for something new and NOT like what the current WoW turned into. I haven't tried Mists of Pandaria though.. They brought back world bosses so that should take care of some of the standing-in-town-teleporting thing, at least a little bit (BTW THAT IS SERIOUSLY FREAKING BORING GAME DESIGN).. but it's too late for me.

That's my barebones explanation. Obviously there's more to it, but I'm not going to sit here writing a page long essay because it's pointless and I'm not in the mood. The game continues to be popular because it started out amazing and nearly perfect. Plus it has a crap ton of people on it, that counts for something, popularity is attractive to people. Now it's more like a casual social hangout kind of thing. Feels like an arcade or something. That won't last unless Blizzard starts changing their mentality. If not, people will move to the next well made MMO. Thing is, nothing spectacular has come around yet. Everyones just trying to make another WoW which won't ever freaking work.

idk that's how I see it.

We do know what happens when companies copy word for word what WoW does into their 'new' games. However I do hope they take the ffxi=everquest part and make ff14=wow in the same sense. In so much as, ffxi and everquest are completely different games, but you can tell the influence somewhat.

I don't want to see wow=swtor=rift=eq2=ff14, people will play for 1 month and realize 'I am just playing wow, that game I played forever and was awesome, but I'm bored with and want something new.' It has to be Final Fantasy with MMO standards added. Take what worked in ffxi, and that was the content. Killing trash and then a boss then more trash over and over every week for years is not acceptable content............ even when it's a new raid from the newest content patch. You still only do 1-3 raids per content patch and NEVER return to older content.

Dynamis-Limbus-Sea-Sky-HNM-etc are all completely different content that made ffxi amazing. Everyday was something new, instead of-raid-raid-raid-raid.. boring.. I don't want to do what I do in wow, where I log in just to do a few hr raid, then there is nothing to do (even after 3 expacs) except wait for the most current raid's timer to tick down.

If anything I want them to make ff14=ffxi and just add in the new features people are accustomed too. FFXI best game all time. I played it for 17000hr, I played wow and all it's clones for less than half of that and it was all because of contentcontentcontent. You either have it or you don't.

The reason behind making FFXIV 'different from FFXI' was due to the fact that SE wanted to keep both MMO's up and running simultaneously.

It's the same reason that after 8 years, the FFXI level cap was finally raised, they need a big and compelling reason to keep FFXI players paying with FFXIV now out on the market.

Sadly, this strategy ended up ruining both games.

It's one thing to be inspired/borrow elements that works well from a successful game, it's another thing completely when one near copies the whole damn thing and put a different skin on it, which is what all too many MMOs these days try to do with WoW.

It's important to maintain your own identity and have your own unique appeal, because you can't out-WoW WoW itself, any attempts to do so will just get you an inferior version of WoW, which has had way much more time to polish and create its contents.

It's good to see people reading between the lines and not having knee-jerk reactions to the mention of "World of Warcraft."

Judging from the final days of 1.0 it seemed like a good blend. Some of the formulaic quests were present in the sense that all the AF quests tended to follow a certain pattern (quest Initiate, 1 minor boss fight, 3 chests, 1 group boss fight). At least majority of the quests didn't continually follow this pattern; some were cs' some were battles, and yet others were gathering things. As long has they change it up it should be ok.

At the same time, they kept the boss battles unique and not just walls to beat down upon. Skill and technique were needed in order to accomplish the tasks, especially in the last 2 GC battles.

Wrong. FFXI had a story at launch, but it was generally dull and didn't really have any impact until the later expansions fleshed it out. So you see Raogrimm was a victim and has seen a lot of unwarranted cruelty to beastmen and other races by the Humes. It's something that you really don't feel anything towards until you play a lot of the later expansions, specifically WotG.

You can hardly compare FFXI's current storyline to XIV's current storyline. Simply because FFXI has far more going on due to being alive and relevant for 7 or so years. Comparing that to an MMO which has only been around for 2 years, most of that time being emphasized on making the game less awful, is completely unfair. I will say that the old storylines of the original game were pretty dull and tedious, and I'm glad to see Yoshida and CoP's writer on board for A Realm Reborn, because the story has already gotten better in the time they've been around.

The interview, however, was pretty interesting to read, surprisingly Kotaku wasn't completely fucking retarded with one of their posts. The comments, not so much.

I do agree that they should be taking the good ideas from WoW and FFXI, and adding their own ideas once they have a steady game to work with. What Tanaka and the original team was doing was completely absurd, and while he wasn't completely at fault, his placing all of the blame on the original dev team was disgusting. As if he had nothing to do with it.
