People are also forgetting something.

They are complaining about people being invited who haven't played the game much and probably won't be testing much.

STOP! Logic time.

If they don't play the alpha very much, SE will be increasing the waves of invites being sent out to make up for the testers that haven't really been testing, while gathering enough statistical information from them to begin with.

That means that more people will be invited in the long run including long term players while SE also managed to gain more information.

If everybody SE invited was a current and long-standing player who is very passionate about the game, chances are they're going to be fairly active in the test. That leaves less room for more people, so the ones who are equally passionate about the game who were not invited in the first place will probably never get a chance to be invited.

As another plus, the inactive players who managed to get into ARR and see how much it changed may go "wow this is really neat" so SE is also increasing their potential playerbase by getting more people interested in the game.

Not really, today alpha invites started but it end now, at least for this week. With the invites sent today will start on weds 28, and SE will see how many people of who got invited will log in and check the servers, then maybe next week will send another round of invites.

Well, if you check lodestone it says:

We have recently begun sending notification e-mails to players accepted as alpha testers for FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn. For those who do not receive an acceptance notification this time, fear not! There will be need to fortify our ranks as time goes on, so your chance to take up arms in battle may come yet.

With this posted like 6 hours+ ago we can assume that it ended for today, and there is no reason to send more invites tomorrow. They won't start looking the aplications that has been submited and writting one by one mail today, SE knew and got the invitation ready and send it on the morning.

Since SE sent a lot of invitation to the alpha they will see who will get online on weds, thurs and friday and check if the server can handle it and then next week if everything goes well will send more.
