from the official upgrader is possible to donwload and keep an iso for a fresh install, so it's tecnically possible not installing 7. I have a guide in italian, so with google you can find it in english
I would highly recommend you play around with W8 and decide if you like it, there are several major changes not just to the UI. The turnoff for me was the severe lack of Power User options and actual overall system control for the end user.
play with it on another drive, it is not an upgrade for everyone.
As for performance my testing results are interesting.
I/O operations on HDD's are faster and more stable using the new FS, there is little to no change in SSD operations. NTFS performs about the same on both W7 & W8, W8 being slighter slower in Read & Burst operations.
Memory Management has improved in W8 Memory operations are more stable and more resourceful leading to less overhead and more raw throughput.
The new Metro UI uses more VRam than W7's Classic setting(about 56mb). Metro UI uses about 88mb its still less than aero's Whopping 147mb. while metro does look nice i personally cant stand the tile, in a tile, in a tile very repetitive and annoying.
Gaming performance is about the same in both W8 and W7, W7 had higher frames rates (8~10 FPS) but i'm chalking that up to poor driver support.
For a gamer or power user you may want to pass on W8, for now at least.
I purchased a new PC after the last save on Nov 1. I installed the game from the disc I purchased in 2010 and received all the patches from SE. Game works as if I was on my old PC. Hope this helps.my computer has come to a point where i must format. My wife got (i think) a nasty virus on it and it wont shutdown, it is slow and all kind of weird things (lesson learned)
I have not done it becuae of my fear that i will be unable to re-install thegame patch it and play hopefully alpha or beta.
any comments on this?
