NPC dialogue - not in chat log?

I feel silly starting a thread about this tiny issue, but

[*] NPC speech will only be visible in speech bubbles, not in chat log, apparently.

W...why?! I don't care if it's in speech bubbles or not, but can't it also show up in our log? Or can't we have a special log filter for it? My eyes often go back to the log to check things NPCs said...
